Visiting grandparents at the moment. They are spending christmas with us. DD (4) has had a small thing she has wanted for a little while and she put it in her letter to santa. Grandparents knew this. They just gave her said item.

Yanbu to be a teeny weeny bit annoyed for a moment - but you're going to brush it off and not go to the trouble of posting about it on MN aren't you?

YABU. The world is not perfect and one little thing won't ruin her Christmas.

Well, my parents gave DS a present from his list last weekend. Good for them I say. YABU - especially if it was a small thing.

If it was a small thing, does it really matter?!

DomiKatetrix · 27/11/2014 21:07

I don't get it.

They gave her something they knew she'd like because they know she wants it.
Have you already bought the item?

Well OP wanted it to be perfect you see. Which meant the DD getting everything on her "Santa" list. From Santa.

Nice to spread out the presents though? I think sometimes there's so many presents on the day they don't all get appreciated.

Do you all give your kids random gifts right before Christmas? I don't. Anything he asks for he can put on his Xmas list (knowing he doesn't get everything he asks for) so I'd be a bit annoyed with people buying him gifts at this point of the year.

I hear you OP.

I'd only be annoyed if I'd bought the item and they knew that - aside from that I can't really see why you were annoyed.

People seem to moan a lot about grandparents on here. Imagine if they wanted nothing to do with their grandchildren and couldn't even be bothered to buy them a birthday card (yes my grandad was like this)

I think its nice that they wanted to buy her a present. Really YABU so get over yourself.

I perhaps should have explained that whilst it is actually a rather small thing, it is the main thing she wants and has been talking about for a while. She only has 3 things on her list. I'd asked grandparents to try and cut down on present giving pre christmas to try and keep the presents on the day more special. Rather than getting gifts every couple of weeks. So yes, she asked for 3 things, we have got them all for her.

If it was a small thing I can't see the big deal. They sound extremely nice people. Honestly OP find something else to fret about.

Report
cruisepool · 27/11/2014 21:22

And yes they knew it was all bought.

And FFS sake you can't moan on anything here without someone coming on with a fecking sob story trying to compare. Just because someone has shite grandparents it doesn't mean other grandparents cannot be a little annoying.

I suppose thinking about it in terms of waiting for things and not getting them straight away I can see your issue. But asking Santa for things is pretty much the same thing IMO because it's not like the child is earning something rather than just being given it in that scenario either.

I'm not bothered by this, I'd prefer gifts came from existing people rather than Santa anyway and he just drops them off (since I'm not mean enough to shatter the illusion for DS just yet). If they're a bit early then so be it.

Let me guess this was your in-laws and not your parents.

cruisepool · 27/11/2014 21:24

And it isn't spreading presents out. It will be in addition to everything else they will give her at christmas, it won't replace.

In context of your last post I would say YANBU. That would have really incensed me; not because I'm petty but by the fact they had obviously not listened to you or respected what you were trying to achieve. They as your/ or partners parents still think they know best. Grrrrr.

Heels99 · 27/11/2014 21:25

I wouldn't care. Unless I had already bought it. If not, why be bothered?

Report
BlinkAndMiss · 27/11/2014 21:25

Cross post OP - ok so your details actually change this slightly. They've bought your DD something she has been asking for for a while and something you'd already got her ready for Xmas - yes, if the grandparents knew that this was something she'd been asking for then they should have checked with you before they gave her it, so YANBU in this case.

Unless you'd specifically told the GP's you'd already bought the gift, YABU.

I don't think it matters how big the present is, who it was supposed to be from or which set of grandparents bought it. If someone knew that I'd already bought something for DD for Christmas, but still bought it themselves and gave it to her a few weeks before Christmas, of course I'd be annoyed.

Report
Heels99 · 27/11/2014 21:28

Yanbu then, you already had this gift bought. That is very irritating indeed.
