YADBU, and chocolate chips have no place in fruit cake! The very idea! I think you could perhaps have a chocolate cake and add raisins to it, if you wish. * bangs gavel *

Yabvvvvu they are essential in Christmas cake as the help the flavour and keep it moist.

Ah, but the cherries look so red and festive in a Christmas cake. And the candied peel is traditional. It's only Christmas once a year, don't be too 'bah humbug'. YAB a bit U.

Like redexpat, I think YABU to lump the candied peel in with the glace cherries. The cherries are just sickly (though they do look nice) & I tend to replace them with dried cranberries / dried sour cherries / dried blueberries.

The peel OTOH has a bit of tang to it & does add something in terms of flavour. I like a bit of finely chopped stem ginger in my Christmas cake too.

He has often said that he doesn't know how glace cherries can in any way be described as a cherry, how dare they etc grin

You are so wrong. The reason I make my own cake is so that I can have four colours of glace cherries, extra orange, lemon and lime peel and stem ginger in it.

I will also be making my own violet creams, complete with crystallised violets and will have crystallised rose petals scattered on top of my trifle...

If only I could find them! I'm in the US and people just look at me blankly when I ask for glacé cherries. 5 supermarkets I've been to to date and not one had a clue...

Try - look for glace, glazed or candied cherries. They do have them.

Candied peel is delicious, if you avoid the ready-chopped cheap stuff.
