YADBU, and chocolate chips have no place in fruit cake! The very idea! I think you could perhaps have a chocolate cake and add raisins to it, if you wish. * bangs gavel *

OraProNobis Tue 25-Nov-14 14:23:18

YABU but that is your prerogative! I need some crystallised violets and can I arseholes find them anywhere! You don't have some in the back of your glace cherry cupboard do you? grin

redexpat Tue 25-Nov-14 14:24:57

Im with you on cherries, but not the peel. What else would you put in hot cross buns?

Aeroflotgirl Tue 25-Nov-14 14:25:43

Yabvvvvu they are essential in Christmas cake as the help the flavour and keep it moist.

treaclesoda Tue 25-Nov-14 14:26:11

Katelyn are you my husband? <narrows eyes>

If not, I think you'd get on famously with him. He would never tire of talking about how evil glace cherries are...

Hatespiders Tue 25-Nov-14 14:28:03

Ah, but the cherries look so red and festive in a Christmas cake. And the candied peel is traditional. It's only Christmas once a year, don't be too 'bah humbug'. YAB a bit U.

CarmelasFridge Tue 25-Nov-14 14:28:17

It's from the days when people were poor, nothing was wasted. There's no other earthly reason for eating PEEL.

TestingTestingWonTooFree Tue 25-Nov-14 14:28:58

Cherries and marzipan are the only reason I make/eat Christmas cake!

cozietoesie Tue 25-Nov-14 14:30:20

Uhhh, Ora

Crystallised violets

ShakeYourTailFeathers Tue 25-Nov-14 14:32:00

Choc chips?
In fruit cake?

<faints>

MagratsHair Tue 25-Nov-14 14:33:57

I can eat glace cherries straight from the pot

<slinks off in shame>

LoonvanBoon Tue 25-Nov-14 14:34:47

Like redexpat, I think YABU to lump the candied peel in with the glace cherries. The cherries are just sickly (though they do look nice) & I tend to replace them with dried cranberries / dried sour cherries / dried blueberries.

The peel OTOH has a bit of tang to it & does add something in terms of flavour. I like a bit of finely chopped stem ginger in my Christmas cake too.

26Point2Miles Tue 25-Nov-14 14:35:29

choc chips are in everything these days! why?? they are so boring!

YANBU. They are VILE.

And yet........and yet................

I feel a bit nostalgic when I look the little dayglo buggers. They remind me of baking with my mum when I was a kid.

Oh and they're a must in Florentines.

<removes the noose from candied peel's neck>

treaclesoda Tue 25-Nov-14 14:41:04

Katelyn he is indeed.

He has often said that he doesn't know how glace cherries can in any way be described as a cherry, how dare they etc grin

MsRinky Tue 25-Nov-14 14:46:34

You are so wrong. The reason I make my own cake is so that I can have four colours of glace cherries, extra orange, lemon and lime peel and stem ginger in it.

I will also be making my own violet creams, complete with crystallised violets and will have crystallised rose petals scattered on top of my trifle...

Wibblypiglikesbananas Tue 25-Nov-14 14:48:47

If only I could find them! I'm in the US and people just look at me blankly when I ask for glacé cherries. 5 supermarkets I've been to to date and not one had a clue...

cozietoesie Tue 25-Nov-14 14:52:41

Wibbly

Try amazon.com - look for glace, glazed or candied cherries. They do have them.

cozietoesie Tue 25-Nov-14 14:56:49

I didn't mean to make that a link - 'twas done without my say so.

MonstrousRatbag Tue 25-Nov-14 14:58:05

Candied peel is delicious, if you avoid the ready-chopped cheap stuff.
