AIBU?

To wonder why ANYONE thinks that this is acceptable in a game?

I am not a fan of violent games at the best of times, but apparently now in Grand Theft Auto 5's new upgrade you can have first person sex with a prostitute before shooting her in the head. With real sex noises. You can see a delightful clip here

I think anyone who plays this is sick. But I know that there are kids in my ten year old's class who have this game. Do the parents even know that they can do this???? I cannot believe any parent would be happy letting their kid or teen play this.

It's banned in my house. I have pal who let's her 7 yr old play it.. I've tried explaining the content but she just give me a blank look.

Adults can play away I'm not arsed but it's really not a game for kids.. even the makers stressed it's for adults only.

No I don't think it's acceptable, and I honestly this sort of genre should be banned. I also dislike porn as I think it desensitises people in regard to what is real and not. I think it gradually becomes the normal. Sexual violence is increasing and I blame the ease with which porn is availble impressional children

The game is an 18 so children shouldn't be playing it anyway, surely the parents know they have it? None of the content is suitable for a 10 year old.

As for an adult playing it - I'm kind of on the fence with this. Yes I can see that it's misogynistic, trivialises the sex industry etc but I have also played and enjoyed it in the past. It's a game for adults.

That's why it has an 18 rating. When I worked in a game shop I used to spend ages stopping parents buying their young kids GTA games. "Oh he only likes it for the cars." Buy a sodding racing game then.

It's against the law to sell it to a child, and new games are expensive, so if kids are playing it, it's because an adult has bought it for them. I make no comment on the contents, other than to say it's not my cup of tea, but that's true of lots of 18 rated content/post watershed viewing. The one thing these things have in common is that they're not intended for children. But, as with many things not intended for children, it's up to parents to control their access.

I think the difference between a game and a movie is that this isn't something you're passively watching, you are the person shagging the hooker and shooting her in the head when you're done. I know it's an 18 game. Doesn't mean I think anyone should play it. And I do know that many parents get it for their kids thinking the ratings are just 'guides' without ever looking into what the content actually is.

But you are controlling the character - you don't do that in a movie.

I say this on every thread about games like this - at some point parents are going to be prosecuted for abuse by letting their children play games like this.

It's abuse.

I work in a primary school and spend every lunchtime with Y5 and Y6 (9-11 year olds). It's quite scary how many of the boys sit and discuss playing GTA and CoD each day.

I think the problem is that many parents don't play games themselves and so view all games as the same thing - as far as they're concerned playing GTA is no different to playing Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog. They've never watched/played the games themselves so have no realistic idea of the content.

Yet if you asked these parents if they would let their children watch, say, Saving Private Ryan, Game of Thrones or Saw, they'd be horrified. Because they understand how films/tv work and what they depict and why we have the certification system in place.

I also have two sons (9 and 6) who love computer games (as do I) and hell will freeze over before they're allowed to play GTA or CoD in my house. I will also spend time explaining why these games are inappropriate for children.

I hope parents do become prosecuted - people might start to take it a bit more seriously then.

Maras - basically you as the player are face to face with the prostitue. You then see her going down on him ( no view of penis) but you see her head bobbing up and down so as the player you see the top of her head and your hands on her head. So it's as though she is giving you the bj. Same goes for when she straddles him with her boobs in his/your face while groaning saying things like 'I love your big c*ck in me' when done, they both get out the car and he pulls the trigger and point blank shoots her. So it's all as though you the player are doing this.

For someone who purports to hate this game, you seem to know an awful lot about it and are delighting in giving us the sordid details. I've never seen GTA nor would I want to, but thanks to you have some nasty, graphic images in my head. What exactly are you trying to achieve here OP?

And no 18 year olds aren't practically children, they may behave immaturely but they are adults, who can do as they wish, when they wish

Absolutely this - at 18 they can join the army and kill people for real FFS. Still children my arse.

Sophia someone asked because they didn't want to click the link. I have never been on the game, I saw an article about this new upgrade, investigated as I know my child's friends play on it. Was horrified. Sorry if you're offended. That's my point though - it is an offensive game.

I think that sexual violence as entertainment is a worrying trend which is getting worse and it's not just games it's tv programs all sorts.

I also agree that there is a difference between watching a film or a program where the characters do something and where you are playing a game and so you are that person doing it. When you play a game then you are immersed to a greater or lesser extent in that character. If I'm playing a game and I'm fighting then to some extent the person on the screen is me fighting. That's kind of the whole appeal / addiction / adrenalin of these games. Like with a good book you want to be fairly immersed in it.

I suppose a question might be would female players generally feel the same about performing this (getting a blow job and then shooting in the head) as male players? I'm guessing not TBH. If I were playing I would not want to complete that part of the scenario. (I haven't played this game BTW).

It's badly done, the woman looks like a ventriloquists dummy, she talks coherently while her head is bobbing up and down she never removes any clothing. She hops on and off him in a very weird way etc all in all, crap. Certainly not titilating, just weird.

It appears to get further and further away from 'a fast car game' minute by minute.

There was a thread about this game a month or two ago, it was very interesting, from a female gamers pov. I found the bits linked to and discussed on that far more disturbing than this one.

That said, I wouldn't let children or teenagers play it and I wouldn't be with an adult who played it.

There was also that rape mod thing that got built which people got very upset about.

I do think there are wider questions to be asked about how sexual violence has become just a bit of light entertainment TBH.

Its a game for 18+. Its a game with lots of freedom. You could exploit a sex worker and kill her or you could completely ignore them. Its up to the player that's the point.

A game or film or an album isn't going to make a young adult want to do these bad things its just going to give warning that they might be capable surely?

I wonder if it would be acceptable if it were ethnic minorities rather than women.

I think the whole concept of these games is vile. They have become way too graphic and realistic for comfort.

If I'm honest, I don't get why anyone would actually want to spend their spare time pretending to be a character who rapes or kills people. If dp did, I'd be questioning my relationship.

There is not a chance in hell I'd ever buy them for my dcs.
