Aibu to think a roast dinner doesn't necessarily need roast potatoes?

Title says it all really. For me so long as you have a roasted bit of meat on the go and maybe some roasted veggies, well then that's fair enough to constitute a roast. Is it just me who thinks roast potatoes are abit unnecessary?

Yabu shock

ReeseWithoutHerSpoon Thu 20-Nov-14 16:23:36

YABU. It is a dinner. But not a true roast.

hellyhants Thu 20-Nov-14 16:23:51

Not unreasonable at all, but I love roast potatoes, for me they are nearly the best bit. But my mum isn't fond of them and prefers roast parsnips.

<<shudders at thought of no roasties>>

Mrsgrumble Thu 20-Nov-14 16:26:14

They aren't 'necessary' but I prefer them. They add a bit of flavour or at the very least you need a bit of garlic potato

Otherwise it's a very ordinary midweek meal IMO

For me a roast dinner IS roast potatoes.

Gruntfuttock Thu 20-Nov-14 16:27:10

I like roast potatoes and roast parsnips. I can't get my head around the concept of roast potatoes being "unnecessary" with a roast dinner! shock

MagicMojito Thu 20-Nov-14 16:27:20

Surely it still counts as a roast dinner though if you have roasted meat and veg... I serve a good dollop of buttery mash with it grin

selsigfach Thu 20-Nov-14 16:27:28

yabu. They're the best bit!

NCIS Thu 20-Nov-14 16:27:35

YABU, it's not a real roast with no roast potatoes it's just meat and veg.

thornrose Thu 20-Nov-14 16:27:54

YAB Soooooooo U.

Thurlow Thu 20-Nov-14 16:28:16

Roast veggies?

Meat. Roast potatoes. Any form of veg, preferably just boiled actually.,

No roast potatoes = no roast dinner.

Tykeisagirl Thu 20-Nov-14 16:28:48

DD doesn't really like potatoes so we often do a mixture of parsnips and sweet potatoes with our roast instead.

I wouldn't want Christmas dinner without roasties though.

Bunbaker Thu 20-Nov-14 16:30:03

I think roast potatoes are massively overrated, so YANBU. I do mashed potatoes instead.

Hmmmwhatnow Thu 20-Nov-14 16:31:12

YAB ridiculous

A roast with no veggies fine, but no rosties?!

skylark2 Thu 20-Nov-14 16:31:13

To me a roast dinner includes roast meat and roast potatoes.

Lots of other things are nice, but without those two it isn't a roast dinner, it's just a dinner.

IHaveBrilloHair Thu 20-Nov-14 16:31:52

I had a roast with no roast potatoes last week, the carrots and parsnips were roasted, as was the beef.
we also had baked onions eith cream and parmesan, and cavalo nero eith butter and bacon, and lashings of red wine gravy

BitOutOfPractice Thu 20-Nov-14 16:32:16

What heinous heresy is this?! How, in the name of all things that are holy, can you say a roast potato is "unecessary". I am aghast. Wash your mouth out young lady

I thought I'd seen it all on MN, I really did. But this takes the biscuit.

In fact. have a biscuit

KnackeredMuchly Thu 20-Nov-14 16:32:41

It's meat and veg, not a roast dinner.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes Thu 20-Nov-14 16:33:13

I'd rather have it without the meat than without the roasties. Roasted veggies OTOH are not acceptable, it makes them go all sweet, far better suited to a Mediterranean type meal. Steamed, plain veg only for me.

Theorientcalf Thu 20-Nov-14 16:33:14

Yabu, I would rather have the roasties than the meat. Especially when DH makes them!
