AIBU?

Teacher marked correct work as incorrect

This has been happening a lot lately, but today feels worse as the school's maths coordinator was taking the lesson. My DC had written that 36 was the square root of 1296. Maths coordinator marked it incorrect and said the correct answer was 936.

AIBU to be really frustrated? These incidents are really knocking his faith in school. I know he's a kid and the teacher is just a human being, but my DC does have form for being unfeasibly good at multiplication so a little faith wouldn't have gone amiss if it wasn't an easy sum for the teacher.

YABU. I'm sure a math coordinator is perfectly capable of working out a square root (unlike me), it's more likely they are just massively overloaded with marking/class prep/fielding parental griping and a mistake was made. Cut them some slack, we're all allowed the odd mistake.

Ach - we all do it!

Tell DC they are right, make a note in the margin, move on!

DC's teachers always asked them to go and see them of they have a query about marked work.

Fair point fluffy. He just repeated the condescending tone she'd used in front of the whole class saying 'close, but not quite!' before she wrote up her answer, and I felt bad for him. He was too polite/scared to correct her correction (I told him that was the right call!). I'm sympathetic to the workload, but it's hard on him too.

We used to have lovely lady who Hermed for the village, she too stopped as it didn't cover her petrol - very rural, little windy lanes and multiple visits required.

Now our local Coop is a Hermes delivery place, so you just go there to pick up your parcels (other couriers have been known to leave stuff with them too).

Ooh! How did that happen... wrong thread entirely Blush

Wilbur, it was being written up on the board, not in their books.

YANBU. The maths teacher has done 30x30+6x6. The method is plain wrong.

He knew exactly what she'd done, too.

YANBU, but just suggest you do as Nomama says.

My DD's homework was marked as correct when it was wrong ("he was already to go"). WTF?

x post.

Poor thing.

I've previously got him to query next to incorrect incorrect (!) marks in his books.

Teach him teachers are human and make mistakes. It's a good life lesson that you are responsible for being an active participant in your learning. It's also a good life lesson that there will always be stupid people in charge that you have to deal with. It's best to come to grips with it now.

DH (maths teacher) is like this Shock

Yes, teachers make mistakes but this doesn't sound to me like a mistake, it sounds like someone who is fundamentally incompetent at maths. Because only someone with no grasp of maths at all could think that 936 could possibly be the square root of 1296.

Report
MillionToOneChances · 13/11/2014 16:54

His other maths teacher was telling them to increase things by a power of 10 or a power of 100 when she meant by a factor of 10 or 100. DS was Hmm

LeBear, the teacher was saying 936 was 36 cubed.

I'd not be worried about your son in this situation since people do make mistakes but I'd be concerned that a teacher doesn't know that 36 x 36 is 1296 and doesn't seem to understand how to multiply numbers.

People are far more tolerant of teachers' mistakes than those in other professions, I find, even those less well paid.

I don't think this is on at all to be honest. Yes, we all make mistakes but if you're trying to teach a class something and a primary aged child can do it better than the teacher - blimey.

LeBearPolar · 13/11/2014 17:04

Oh I see. I read the OP wrong - I thought they had been asked to find the square root of 1296 and the conflict was between 36 and 936. Sorry.

36 is the square root of 1296

Actually, to be really pedantic, I would change one thing to make that statement correct, (but it's not 36 or 1296 that I would change).

Squared or cubed?? Because cubed would be even more wrong!

"LeBear, the teacher was saying 936 was 36 cubed."

Squared, surely.

Anyway, your DS is right.

MillionToOneChances · 13/11/2014 17:08

Yes, squared obviously. Multitasking with cooking dinner! Blush

daddad enlighten me? I'm not a maths coordinator, though I'd usually say 'the square root of 1296 is 36'...?

Strictly, you should say "a square root of 1296 is 36" because it has another square root, which is -36.
