About ds's christmas school nativity?

Oh yes, it's that time of year again.

Ds (5 and year 1) was away last week when they started rehearsing and gave out parts. He came home with a note in his diary on friday saying he was a sheep. He was happy being a sheep, I was planning in my mind how to make a sheep costume, fine.

On Monday he came home with a note saying he was now a king and also with a few lines to practice. Ds was quite pleased, although he hasn't minded being a sheep either, and started practicing his lines. He was quite proud that he had learnt them very quickly and talked about his king costume and crown.
He told me the original king was now a sheep because he couldn't behave and listen to the teacher.

On Tuesday original king's mother was complaining on playground over her child's demotion to sheep. Sigh. She said she was going to go and see the teacher.

The upshot of this is that ds is now a sheep again. I'm slightly pissed off even though I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. However where ds was originally perfectly content with his sheep role, he now feels slightly disappointed that he won't have any lines. I appreciate this is how the original king must have felt but he lost his role because he was being a pain. Ds has lost his role because original king's mother has kicked up a fuss.

It's vaguely amusing written down but I am cross!

The teacher sounds as weak as water...

Just tell him - there are no small parts , only small actors darling!

But yeah, the teacher sounds spineless

YANBU, that's unfair on your DS to offer the role and then take it away again. Go and kick up a fuss too!

As a teacher, what on earth is she thinking?!
You can't give out parts to five year olds and take them away and give them back on a whim. Least you know what to get for her Xmas gift, know anyone that sells backbones?!
Poor wee sheep x

I think you should produce a King Sheep outfit. Fluffy but with golden robes and crown.

Every year people say things like this have happened at their schools, I find it unbelievable that teachers can be so pathetic as to cower to parents demands like this.

If they are so unconfident in their methods of discipline that they crumble as soon as a parent tells them to, they really shoudo to be in the job.

I'd go to the head and explain what's happened, they probably don't know.

He said: mummy I used to have some proper words but now I'm only saying baaaaaaa.
He said baaaaaaa in a very mournful fashion!
Poor sheep.

Other mother must have kicked off big time, shame teacher didn't stick to the role swap.

Good on DS for not making a fuss.

Stupid woman. Honest to god, you have to wonder how some people get and keep their jobs! If DS is upset I'd go in and kick up a fuss too, leave her to work out how her play can be adapted to have two kings if she's too spineless to say no to a Disruptive Boy's Mother.

Crap teacher.

I'd go in and point out she hurts your Ds's feelings.

Not in an angry way. Just so she knows.

King Sheep needs to have more lines than Disruptive King. And a bigger crown. And first billing.

CarpetCrawler · 12/11/2014 18:02

Your poor DS, he needs to be the leader of the flock and wear a crown.

Personally I think they should rename the whole thing "King Sheep". After all what is more miraculous than a talking sheep who is also a king?

Disruptive king's mother is a bit scary. I can see why teacher caved in the face of her wrath.

I was that mum last year who complained about DS not getting a speaking part.

I didn't want another child demoted though just for existing lines to be distributed more evenly. Ie there were four lines / four children, only three said lines. Confused

I wrote a blog about it!

I told some friends, one was horrified - I should have sucked it up - school if hard knocks etc, one said she would feel the same but wouldn't say anything and one said same happened in her kids school.

I don't care this year, he had a line last year and that's all I wanted; all the kids to have a chance not the same ones getting speaking parts every year. He is currently practising this years songs tunelessly beside me. He won't make the chamber choir I suspect!!

Some information that may help:

Nowhere in the Bible does it say there were three kings, or travellers from the East, or however they are referred to. Just that they brought three presents. The only thing that the text implies is that there was more than one as it uses a plural. So there could have been two, there could have been twenty two . . .

and there could have been four.

... just sayin'

Report
Hurricaneinateacup · 12/11/2014 18:07

Ds could go from sheep to king to sheep to unorganised king who forgot to bring a gift.
I did wonder about going in and saying ds has learnt the lines - there were only four or five - and could they not add an additional king.

I've often wondered why certain kids who aren't very good get all the best parts time after time. Pushy parents and weak teachers then.

What a ridiculous going on! First punishing a child through the play (out of order unless extreme) then "demoting" effectively telling happy 5yos that some parts are better than others when there was totally no need. Finally demoting your child when he'd not misbehaved despite having established demotion is a punishment. ... dreadful teacher imo!

At the very least she should have a invented an extra king role and split the lines.
