DM had her BB last week, so it's all a bit of a novelty for her.

I took her out for lunch in our local village yeaterday.

I had the choice of 2 spaces out of about 24 road spaces near the restaraut.

One disabled spot and one normal spot - wide enough, so no worries about her getting out the car with her stick.

I'll grab that one, says I, caring daughter, as it's nearer the restaurant.

No, says she, we must park in the Disabled Bay up there.

Butbutbut, this one is nearer, so better for you, less far to walk.

Nonononono, we have to aprk in the Disabled Bays to leave more spaces for those without BBs.

I think she sounds considerate. If there were only two spaces left, by using the disabled one you would be leaving a universal one free. By leaving only the disabled one free there was a high possibility the next person wanting to park would not be able to do so.

flowery, yeah that's a good point, but it's a strange road, 90mins maximum free stay, lots of little shops, so generally if you hover for a couple of mins, or go arounf the block once, a space or two become free for you. So, there's lots of movement.

I suppose the whole point is that the BB gives her the choice of whichever bay suits her best . in this case the closer general space

I don't generally care how far away I park, but a month or so ago I went to the grocery and I was in quite a hurry, so I was trying to park close. In one of the aisles, the first two spaces were empty, a disabled one and a regular one. There was one car in front of me, but he had a disabled sticker, so I thought he would take the disabled space, and I could take the regular one. Perfect. Nope, he took the regular space, so I had to drive down and park at the end of the aisle. Not the crime of the century, but it was really irritating at the time.

Yep she must be an AIBU regular. I posted a while back about someone having a go at me for parking in a regular on road parking space instead of the disabled space further up which was empty. She must have read my thread.

I have a BB. Generally I would park in the nearest space. Sometimes you are only allowed to park for 3 hours in a general space whereas time is often unlimited in a disabled space.

It is better to leave a disabled space free so that when the road fills up it is an able bodied person forced to drive and park further away.

I the end if there are 24 spaces total and only oneof them is a diabled space and there are 22 BB holders and 3 non-BB holders it should be one of the non-BB holders that parks a road away. The way to do this is to leave the disabled bay free so that the last BB badge holder can use it.

If there are a lot of disabled bays there may come a point when it would be reasonable to use the disabled bay (and it's always reasonabel if it's more convenient for the BB holder) even though there are other spaces available. But if possible leaving one free for the last possible BB holder would seem to be more in keeping with the point of the bays which is to try and ensure BB holders are less likely to be forced to park far away.

Your DM sounds thoughtful though.

Your DM sounds lovely, but surely the better choice is to leave the BB space free so that the person of higher need - the next BB badge holder - will be able to take it. An able bodied person can park somewhere else and walk.

I agree with simonetta. Unfortunately, I need my BB all the time now but when I didn't, I refused to use it if there were limited places as there may have been other BB holders more in need.
