AIBU?

to think that if the children are on the stairs it's the fault of whoever left the stair gate open?

DH just had a big go at me. I put a picture frame on the stairs to go up next time someone was passing.

DS1 (2yrs) just climbed the stairs unaccompanied and stood on it and broke it. We also have DS2 (9 months very active). We have a stair gate which DH had left open (he was the last one to use it)

Apparently it's all my fault that the picture frame was broken as it MUST be the fault of whoever left it on the stairs. I countered with it being the fault of whoever (him) left the gate open because if DS hadn't been unaccompanied on the stairs it wouldn't have broken.

AIBU to think it's a bloody accident and nobody should be having a go at anyone but if ANYONE had the right to have a rant it's me because he left the gate open?

Well the stairs is a stupid place to put it. Kids hang off or pull at Stair Gates or climb over them so could have happened at any time. Or could have broken it whilst attended on stairs.

But yes he shouldn't have a go if he left the gate open

DS's are 100% not able to get over the gate

Your DH is guilty as charged.

My DD could get over the gate at 2 ... much to my surprise. Blush She sort of rolled over the top.

He's very lucky it was the picture and not the child that was damaged by coming down.

Pet hate of mine. Why make the life of the other person harder. I have been known to shout 'do you just forget that we have children'. He should also be apologising for not taking the frame up (unless he had his hands full).

It was an accident but it was DH's fault. If the child gets upstairs, it's the fault of whoever left the gate open, nobody else's.

Could the DC have opened the gate himself? 2 year olds can be inquisitive and like to explore and they have brains.

I'd say you're both bu. You for leaving anything on the stairs full stop, never a safe place to put anything especially breakables! What if someone tripped coming down over it... and your dh is for leaving the gate open in any case.
