to like my hair

today - when I have an appointment for a haircut tomorrow, that I've been desperately looking forward to for weeks.

I have long hair, but its getting straggly at the back and I was planning to get 4 or 5 inches cut off, which would leave me with just slightly longer than shoulder length. For a few weeks now I've had it tied back almost every day...

...but today, I've blow-dried and straightened it properly for the first time in ages so the hairdresser doesn't think I'm a frumpy slattern and worn it loose and I really like it.

Realistically I know if its shorter I'm more likely to straighten it and therefore wear it loose, and it grows really quickly so I know I should still get all that length taken off tomorrow. 3 days ago I was all set to take the scissors to it myself!

It will look even better all tidied up. Have less off if you like. It's your hair.

This is what is known as sod's law.

I ummed and ahhed about getting my long hair trimmed at the weekend as I am trying to grow it but I am so glad I did - it looks so much tidier and lighter.

4/5 inches is quite a lot to lop off...more than a trim to tidy it up.

If I were you i'd just go and get 2 inches off, enough to tidy it up/get rid of split ends but not too much.

I was exactly the same last week!!

I had 4 inches off and tbh can hardly tell the difference to look at me and no one has noticed but it feels so much healthier and it's lovely to have 'neat' ends

Keep the length and get it styled.

Lots of layers?

Hashtag it already has lots of layers, hence looking untidy at the ends where its thinnest.

Walking and Purple if I'm being objective I think it needs the 4 inches off to look its best. I'll still have a lot of hair.

Milly and chrome thank you for the voice of experience! I've a feeling no-one else will notice it shrinking 4 inches, except to perhaps think it looks a little neater somehow.

I don't know why the sudden wobble really, since at the weekend I was contemplating having it all chopped off and going very short again but won't because I look like a butch lesbian if I have short hair when I'm overweight

I quite often turn up at the hairdressers, and think, actually my hair looks quite nice.

Its not unheard of for it to look worse afterwards.

Secret may be little and often, once you've found what works ... which will change anyway!

My hair always looks fabulous the day after I book a hair appointment.

By the time the appointment comes around it's a mess again. Go with your first instinct.

Well the haircut was a success!

My hairdresser disagreed when I said I thought I needed about 4-5 inches off to tidy it up, and only took about 2-3 inches off.

Its now lovely and smooth and shiny, and doesn't feel any shorter, even though I saw all the hair on the floor!

That's the law when it comes to hair appointments.

Just before an appointment my previously straggly hair suddenly looks lovely, smooth and shiny, just to spite me.

I went from thigh to shoulder not that long ago.

A frozen shoulder is what made that ultimate decision for me.

I miss my long hair, but am enjoying this shoulder length for the moment.

YABVU to use "butch lesbian" in the pejorative.
