WIBU to buy a woven wrap with DS's birthday money/my xmas money?

I've just been floating the idea around, DS is one just before Xmas, my family don't live close to me and are sending money for me to buy him something he needs. He has LOTS of toys and I do put cash savings aside for him in general.

I don't drive and tend to use a sling/woven wrap to go anywhere, I rarely use our pram now as DS prefers the carry and I find it lots easier on public transport, I'm currently using a woven wrap my friend has lent to me.

I'd love one for Christmas and DP has offered to buy me one. I have seen one that is a bit more expensive than I would go for for just myself but wondered if it would be really brass necked to use the money sent for DS to cover the additional cost. Wraps hold their value and so I could always sell it when DS is older and put any money from this back into his savings. In the mean time it is something we both use daily.

I'm just not sure if it is really cheeky/unfair on DS. I thought I would get the general consensus before putting the idea out to my family in case it's something that would be a massive faux pas!

Brilliant idea

They are sending money for something he needs-I would say a wrap ticks that box! I wouldn't think twice about using it.

No that's fine. He's going to be the one snuggled up and cosy in it anyway isn't he? Maybe when he's a bit older you can use it as his blanket? I have a baby blanket which I still have which I used when I got a little older as a blanket to snuggle up in when I was watching the TV or as an extra layer on a cold night. My son has the same blanket now, he likes to snuggle up and watch TV in it too. So it doesn't mean you will stop using it once he's too big to be carried in it. He can still use it as a blanket at home or in the car. I think it's a nice idea, it's also something he can use as he gets bigger. Go for it. It's a nice thing to spend the money on.

Go for it! If he loves being carried, then it's about the nicest present you could get him.

TheWhisperingDeath Sun 02-Nov-14 19:50:34

Sounds eminently sensible.

Go for it. I did similar. I think the point of money for small ones is to help the parents out a little, not just for a piece of plastic they won't get a lot out of anyway.

You'd be far more unreasonable to spend it on toys he doesn't need. Go for it.

Great idea, I did the same a few times.

In fact, I have an unused Cailin Bleu wrap you can have if you like. Then you can save the money for something else. PM me if you'd like it.

I did exactly that, we're keeping the wrap for DD to use with her DC (if that's what she chooses) smile

Excellent idea, he will enjoy being cuddled up against you, Michele enjoyable than another toy.

Do it! I bought my DS a new sling for his 1st birthday :D

Ooooh, have a look at Firespiral wraps, they're absolutely gorgeous and soft and made ethically in the North of England.
I think it's a splendid idea!

ispyfispi Sun 02-Nov-14 22:30:35

Absolutely do it....but do tell us which wrap!

QueenArseClangers Sun 02-Nov-14 23:36:45

Be warned though: they are addictive!

Oh hurray! A unanimous vote! This makes me feel much better!

I LOVE the idea of passing it on to DS for his children if he chooses to. Asleep that is a very kind offer but I think I will be naughty and buy the wrap I've developed an unhealthy lust for seen and go for that.

It's the Didymos Orient. grin

Although did have a mooch on firespiralslings and ohmygoodness the birch tree wraps are just lovely!

When I first went to my local sling library I actually scoffed when she joked it was addictive. Then I bought my Girasol R/S and joined a few BW groups on FB and now spend far too much time gazing and pretties! DP thinks I've gone a bit loopy..blush

grin you and your titch enjoy your new wrap.
This is my baby snuggled up in a very lovely Firespiral wrap.

Allstoppedup Mon 03-Nov-14 20:11:36

Aww how beautiful! I love their little knitted hat too!

I'm very excited to get my wrap ordered now! grin

Ooooh, had a gander at the Didymos Orient: it's beautiful! Absolutely gorgeous.
Happy wrapping smile

Well I'm the lone voice then, but I wouldn't do it. Any money ds got for his birthday I put away in a savings account for him, he's got a nice little nest egg now of quite a few thousand pounds built up over his childhood ready now for when he finishes uni, just from birthday/Christmas money.

ladymariner Mon 03-Nov-14 23:42:01

By the way, I do think the wraps are lovely, I just think its something the parent should buy.

sykadelic Mon 03-Nov-14 23:52:13

Well, while I couldn't help but feel iffy about it... baby showers and other things are typically things for you, used by him, so I think it's perfectly sensible to say he doesn't need toys right now but DOES need a sling.

Allstoppedup Tue 04-Nov-14 09:35:46

Oh lady boo! wink it was going so well!

I know what you are saying as it is exactly why I asked though! I would say that this would definitely be a one off and any subsequent birthday/Christmas money would certainly go to his savings (I put monthly money in anyway and all money/bits he's been given at birth have all gone in there so hopefully he will end up with a similar nest egg!)

We don't have much cash and oddly I don't think I would have thought it would be an issue if we needed a new pram so I'm going with the majority sister loved the idea so she's on board already! grin

Allstoppedup Tue 04-Nov-14 09:37:49

Queen Thank you! It's just amazing isn't it! All those colours...

teenagetantrums Tue 04-Nov-14 09:41:33

I think its a great Idea, its not like you are buying something for yourself, he will be using it,if I had sent you money for your child to be honest I wouldn't care what you spent you it on,( buy yourself wine for all I care if it makes you happy)but better something that will be used than more toys that get discarded after a few months.
