AIBU?

To want to ban any threads with 'Christmas' in the title until least the 1st Nov (apart from mine obviously!)

OK I've seen two Christmas threads today on MN and that's two too many! It's fecking August!!

Christmas is on 25th Dec, nobody should put lights up until 1st Dec or later and there should be nothing in the shops until November. As for Christmas music in shops I would allow this on Christmas Eve only.

Nobody should have a works Christmas 'do' in early November either Confused (yes colleagues I am talking to YOU.

With you on this one, Shady! (I'd happily wait till end of November before there's any mention of the C word.)

Surely using the word "Christmas" is helpful to people like yourself who don't wish to read Christmas bassed threads, you can just not open the thread, or are you one of those people who enjoy being offended so you open the thread and say something rude about it being too early to talk about Christmas or that the person should have posted in the Christmas topic?

YABU.

I love Christmas.

This is reason enough. No further justification required.

Yabu. Hide the topic.

As a bona fida Christmas Lover I should say that YABU Wink

But .....there is the Christmas Topic.

Though some posters have very complex family situations (family, ILs, moving, babies due ) so they do need to think ahead (it's 120 days now but I bet you didn't want to know that did ya? )

Only thing that gets my dander up is Xmas
And The Holidays

YANBU

All Christmas posts (including this one) should be in the Christmas topic.

Then MNetters can use it or hide it, bringing it out only when their festive season starts.

Free for all in any topic traditionally starts on Advent Sunday or 1 Dec (whichever is first).

There have been so many newbies in the last year or so that the 'normal' MN way might not be well enough known.

YABU

They should all be banned until the 1st of December.

Yanbu.

There is a Christmas topic (which can be hidden) but people can't even be bothered to post their threads there.

I love Christmas too and all the early bargain threads.
If you don't want to read them you don't have to, but for some people who need to shop early, threads like the bargain thread and early gifts in the shops are a God send.
I have to have mine done by end of November or it won't be done at all.

Only 4 more pay days and I need to spread the cost.

But why can't people post Christmas stuff in the christmas topic?
I wouldn't rock over to secondary education and ask "what's the best way to cook a ham"

Because that would be in the wrong topic

Optimist1 · 27/08/2014 17:20

Don't misunderstand my previous post - I love Christmas (and understand there are reasons why people need to make preparations ahead of time) but I'd be happier if the posts on MN confined themselves to the Christmas topic, shops remained tinsel-free zones and TV was Yule-free till much closer to the event!

I like Christmas too! But people like to make out I'm a mean spirited curmudgeon for objecting to the proliferation of Christmas threads in bloody August.

Report
AuntieStella · 27/08/2014 17:45

I don't actually care how many Xmas threads there are, or when people post them.

I just think they should be in the Christmas topic (other than between Advent Sunday and Twelfth Night).

MNHQ used to move ones that popped up prematurely in other topics elsewhere. I hope they continue that established practice.

I do like a Christmas thread, you can ignore it if you want by hiding the thread? Wink

I do see your point that it should perhaps remain within the topic, like the Christmas section.

I always think the people who have a problem with Christmas threads about shopping etc must have plenty of money! I need to spread the cost and there's no way I could pay for everything from November's pay. I love Christmas too so don't mind general talk of it.

Depressingly, I've already seen C*s cards in two shops this month.

See my cunning use of asterisks there? Maybe people should do that until December. Although, inevitably, people would think it was something to do with cunts Grin.

DD shocked her friends at school last year when she told them I don't allow any mention of the c-word or any music until Dec 1st. I was dead proud!
