To think this is hilarious!

So my younger brother (18) has tasks to do in return for lifts here and there. One of these is to cut the lawn. He hasn't done the front one in a good few months and it looked like a bit of a jungle. We all refused to do it as it's DBs job and it was up to him to get it done even though the longer he left it the harder it'd be.

Well yesterday we were all out and someone appears to have snuck in and done the front lawn! AIBU to find this really funny?
No one ever mentioned to us that they wanted it done or anything. I would understand if people didn't like it much but they could have said something rather than sneak in and do it themselves!

Bifauxnen Mon 25-Aug-14 12:02:02

That's nice of them. Would drive me crazy trying to work out who it was.
We're you out long? I have a vision of one of your neighbours in full camo gear poised with a strimmer waiting for the perfect time to strike. grin

OwlCapone Mon 25-Aug-14 12:03:40

I'd be embarrassed rather than amused.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie Mon 25-Aug-14 12:03:41

Wish someone would do.mine.

In one of the houses we lived in we had an open lawn at the front of our house we shared with our neighbours. DH was away a lot and I was too bloody lazy to do it. At first our neighbours only did the bit in front of their house. I think that they believed they would shame us into doing our patch (they obviously didn't know me very well). After a while they started making little hints about how messy it looked which I choose to ignore. The neighbour eventually started mowing are bit as well but when I would say thank you for mowing the lawn he would always deny doing it. Despite of the fact that would watch him as he mowed the lawn.

Bifauxnen Mon 25-Aug-14 12:09:18

Your db should pay it forward and secretly mow someone else's lawn for them. Then they could do the same.
<hopes this means someone will eventually come and do mine>

Stratter5 Mon 25-Aug-14 12:10:39

I'm with Owl, I'd be mortified.

awsomer Mon 25-Aug-14 12:14:41

Muskey, doesn't that make you feel a bit... blush?

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall Mon 25-Aug-14 12:15:41

Ive heard of this before. My parents live in a village that gets nominated towards Britain in Bloom. They have told me that there is someone who will secretly mow lawns just before judging, but they dont know who it is. They are good at gardening though so do theirs themselves. Wish someone would do mine.

Bifauxnen, I love the idea of starting some sort of shared mowing scheme where a random member does your lawn each week and you have to do someone elses'!

DB is a lazy arse and so he's extremely happy it's been done (much to my annoyance as it's his job, but I'll come up with some other chore for him!)

Of course it's a bit embarrassing but at the same time it's just grass. It's not like we'd put old washing machines and fridges out there to rot. I sort of see it as I don't mind long grass in the slightest. But I don't really like the little woodland animals that people put out all over their lawn, that doesn't mean I'm going to go out and steal them away 'cause I don't like the sight of them. AND if I did feel that way I'd actually speak to the person first rather than sneak about.

It is quite fun trying to work out who it was! I doubt they'll own up either though, Muskey!

paddleduck Mon 25-Aug-14 12:22:29

I do think this is very funny! But only because it isn't my lawn haha!

Muskey Mon 25-Aug-14 12:24:13

No it didn't tbh...I just felt that he was doing the grass anyway so why not do all of it. Where we lived was prone to very heavy snow the neighbours would only clear their path to the front door DH and I would clear both drive ways and all the paths leading from the houses because it helped everyone.

MidniteScribbler Mon 25-Aug-14 12:25:39

I'd be mortified if my yard got to the stage that a neighbour felt they needed to do it.

Bettercallsaul1 Mon 25-Aug-14 12:28:26

You'll never know who cut the lawn, OP, unless someone grasses.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles Mon 25-Aug-14 12:30:42

Not cut in months, that must have made the neighbours twitchy. Maybe one of them plans on selling their property and felt they'd give you a hand.

Bifauxnen Mon 25-Aug-14 12:31:06

Mow-ones going to do that.

Bettercallsaul1 Mon 25-Aug-14 12:34:35

It was more useful just to mow it rather than make cutting remarks.

honeysucklejasmine Mon 25-Aug-14 12:35:01

How awful. I don't think i could look my neighbours in the eye! My back garden i don't mind so much, but i think its a bit inconsiderate to make the street look messy.

Having said that, DH is very good at keeping on top of it. But we live on a new estate so everyone is pretty house proud.

blibblibs Mon 25-Aug-14 12:37:04

Our neighbours did our grass last week while we we're away smile

We know it was them as they said they would as we were leaving.

I'm not embarassed - just wish I'd left the bolt off the back gate so they could've done that too grin

BlueBrightBlue Mon 25-Aug-14 12:39:25

My neighbour has been cutting my hedge for the past year. To be fair I used to do his when his elderly mother lived there. I often prune a very overhanging rose bush for my neighbour. They must know it's me as I have often asked if I can tidy it up a but as it's quite hazardous when walking past on the pavement.

Muskey Mon 25-Aug-14 12:39:26

Bifauxen and bettercallsaul are you two a double act by any chance you are cheering me up no end

BlueBrightBlue Mon 25-Aug-14 12:40:51

my dad does several of his neighbours; edges them too and leaves perfect stripes. No one ever complains.

Staywithme Mon 25-Aug-14 12:41:09

grin at all the people on here who would be mortified. I wish someone would embarrass me by cutting my lawn. grin

LatteLoverLovesLattes Mon 25-Aug-14 12:44:02

My ex inlaws used to live in a village where there were rules on how long your front lawn could be and what plants you were allowed to put in - batshit! grin

Oh well, the loo needs cleaning doesn't it grin

MostAmused Mon 25-Aug-14 12:44:52

Seems 50/50 whether people would be embarrassed.

TBH, I think if I lived at my own place, and thus it was my responsibility, it would have been done. It's only been left as it's my DB's job.

Loving the grass puns smile
