AIBU?

to be fed up with all the constant sport on TV?

I am just fed up with it. World cup, Wimbledon, Golf, Formula 1, now the Commonwealth Games.

Why is it on the main channels? Why isn't it on BBC 3 or 4? Why is it on BBC 1, as if it is THE most important thing on TV?

I bet the audiences for the Commonwealth Games are not high. Even DH. is not watching it and he will watch almost any sport.

I think it is an imposition on the majority of the population and a huge assumption that we are that interested. Am I being unreasonable.

YANBU it's so boring.

YADNBU. I also hate how other programmes have to be shifted to accommodate bloody sport. It bores me shitless.

I am enjoying it and I know people that have been there to watch events. The venues are packed with spectators and so are the fan areas.

YABU about a multi sport event like Commonweath Games/Olympics but not about the endless football.

(Btw they are showing certain events live from Glasgow on BBC3)

Stop moaning ,there are plenty of other channels if you don't like it . Some of us don't like the usual crap that's on ie soaps and reality drivel but we don't keep moaning about it we just find something else to watch.

I suppose it's got to be on somewhere. If it's on BBC3 or 4 it's going to displace something just as it does on BBC1.

At least it's not effing football. AND at least we (uk) are doing pretty well. Unlike the cringe fest of the world cup.

I've decided to look on the large amount of uninteresting (to me) sports events currently on TV as an opportunity to catch up with all the TV shows I have recorded on my PVR box. It's made me feel much more cheerful about the boring sports.

Bloody hell YANBU but you forgot to add the Tour de Sodding France! Somebody save me!!!

YANBU - The BBC is simply shafting licence-payers who don't enjoy professional games-playing. At one point over the weekend BBC1 and BBC3 were both showing this tedious jamboree in Glasgow and BBC2 was showing that dismal procession known as GP.

Let's all remember the line in Monty Python where the continuity announcer says And for those of you who don't like sport, there's sport.

Oh and hands off BBC4.

Am I the only one loving it?

My idea of TV heaven, also stuff we watch together as a family. The kids also message other family members and share it with them and it's what we talk about when the family gets together.

I enjoyed the Tour de France... for the ten minutes they cycled through our town and surrounding villages, then I switched it off.
I get sick of all my usual shows being bumped for sport - Doctors and Casualty being the main ones to suffer. Most annoyingly Holby City is still on (moved to BBC2) where as Casualty is cancelled.
I am so glad I have a good TV package with good on demand programmes to get me through it, plus the weather has been good so watching less TV over all.
YANBU!

What programmes are being "shifted" to accomodate sport? The commonwealth games have been scheduled for ages, it's not like the BBC scheduled other programmes and suddenly realised they couldn't show them because of the sport.

Totally agree with floral - there are other channels to watch if you don't like it. I do not watch soaps at all but I don't moan about them being on all the time.

This summer has been my idea of heaven Grin plus my 8 year old has watched sports he wouldn't normally watch and loved them.

Totally shallow but I was very impressed by the 4 topless male swimmers that were just on Wink Wink Wink

Are we not always moaning that people in this country are too unfit?! One of the ways to inspire people is to show their peers that have managed it, like that English marathon runner who a few years ago was a 40 a day couch potato. Then he had an epiphany, lost 6 stone and now holds the British record for Over 40's Men's Marathon.

Why does it matter what channel things are on BBC1, BBC2. Who cares?!

YABU

The Commonwealth games are amazing The venues are packed and it's very exciting to watch if you take a little time.

I'm not really a massive sports fan and certainly don't sit down to watch football or golf but the Commonwealth games are only every 4 years and some of it has been really inspiring.

Don't be all bah humbug-ish.

Yabu. It's summer in a Commonwealth/World Cup year.

We've got all winter to sit In front of the box watching bilge like Holby City.

I find that mostly (mostly!) people who moan about too much sport on the TV are those who watch soaps.

I'm sick of all the soaps.

I've had enough of it. Football, tennis, cycling and now the commonwealth. They never show anything interesting like horse riding.

Report
BarleyBub · 29/07/2014 21:48

Horse riding is on TV all the time.

I don't watch soaps. But I hate sport. I hate the way that it's pushed as the most important thing in the world. It's just bread and circuses.

Report
LuluJakey1 · 29/07/2014 21:55

I hate soaps.

I just object to there being nothing interesting on TV and the assumption made by the main national tv channel for which we all pay our license fee, that they will inflict sport on the nation at peak time viewing. It's insulting.

I know some people will watch it on TV and some will choose to actually go there and watch it, but there are millions who would prefer not to watch it.

I'll be interested to see what the figures are when they come out to see if its position on BBC 1 has been warranted.

You could say that about anything they put on at peak times though. Plenty of people don't like soaps, or drama, or comedy, or reality TV, and yet they are all shown on TV far more than sport.

BBC is about more than viewing figures.
