My DH randomly instigates conversation with strangers in a given environment (ie pub, supermarket queue, drs surgery) inappropriate and/or embarrassing..it makes me squirm. Am I just uptight ?

I hope he doesn't talk to any kids he sees on passing canal boats.

Yes, you are uptight.

What do you mean by 'inappropriate'?

I talk to random people, embarrasses the DDs no end.

I'm a big fan of random conversation, but not when it gets too interrogative. The guy in our corner shop asks us such specific questions about our day and our plans for the evening it drives us both mad.

DP calls him that fucking twat.

But general chat that doesn't get personal or specific is what makes the world go round. Which side is your DHs patter on?

What is wrong with some people? I joined a quiz on the train last night, and no, none of us were tipsy either. It was fun.

Where are all the posters asking if you are a Londoner? Must have learnt their lesson on the canal thread!

I talk to random people as well, and it embarrasses DD.

So lock me up.

No tow paths round here though Grin

You are either uptight or perhaps slightly envious that he can make conversation so easily with strangers.

What do you mean by inappropriate?

'Show us your tits, love'

'Wow your kids are ugly'

'Me and the wife had CRACKING sex last night'

?

actually this conversation has come about because I was laughing at the tow path thread..we are both mad for canal boats and its the dcs fave holiday, so I was reading that thread to dh, when he said...if it's 'what we do when on the tow path and you think that's normal, enjoy it and join in, why do you freak out when I do it in a supermarket queue ' I just think it's weird to engage someone in conversation about a completely random subject when they are out shopping/having a drink with partner/waiting to see the doctor ..it just seems a bit ...well strange .Hmm

It isn't weird or strange at all. You are uptight. Loosen up. Are you the mother on the canal boat?

I think it's friendly.

backbystealth Lordy Lordy not quite that inappropriate Grin .just going up to people out for an evening drink together and tries to instigate a conversation based on something we have been discussing but the other person/people have not been involved in at all....

In other countries this is called being friendly. You should try it.

I frequently lose DH for an hour because he's struck up a conversation with a random person in a shop or somewhere. Mind you he's the type of person who wherever we are will find the one stranger who knows someone who is either related to him or worked with a friend of a colleagues cousins dog.. Grin

My Dad was lovely.

Years ago, I was starting a new job and needed to find a flat. I took my Dad with me. It was away from home and we stayed over in a hotel. My Dad has always woken up early and I was woken at 5 am by a hair dryer roaring, and since dad was bald I wondered what it was (it was 2 adjoining rooms.)

He told me stroppily he'd gone out for a walk (at 4 am Hmm) and it had started raining.

"I saw a woman with an umbrella and I said 'ooh can I share it?' and she ran off."

Bless him. It wouldn't have raised an eyebrow in the Lancashire town he hails from but near London was another matter!

It's normal to chat to people, it's a shame we've become so self involved that we think it's weird when people try to engage them in conversation. People seem so insular now, it's sad.
