I actively dislike it. DH actively disagrees with me.

Why are you watching it now? It's not Christmas eve! (Yanbu)

I'm not pillow. I'm just flouncing out of another AIBU (well I'm trying, but it's too hot for a full flounce really).

Then I got concerned that I was a lone IAWL fan Sad

I'm afraid I struggle with it. But it's a family tradition of sorts so usually see it at so e point every Christmas.

It's not the story, but I just find most films from that era really grate on my nerves. So hammy and swoony and over dramatic.

There are many films I want to like, Casablanca, Gone with the wind, Brief encounter etc but just can't get past the ridiculous acting.

Same here. I wonder if it is because of the fact that when he sees the alternative world if he hadn't been there his wife is such a sad sack spinster?

But Lady you're wrong about the others.

LadyLemongrab · 20/07/2014 22:36

I know!

I'd also rather vomit up my own anus than watch glee or mama Mia or a west end musical so perhaps I'm rather out of of step with most people? ( I'm right though, they're all shite).

Ridiculous acting in Casablanca?! That's blasphemy!

Report
sinisterfish · 20/07/2014 22:38

i dunno i'm a bit meh about it but i like the films i like, why would you judge someone as being suspect if they didn't like it, suspect in what sense?

Report
sinisterfish · 20/07/2014 22:38

what's your favourite film then op and i can judge if you're suspect too

Report
effinandjeffin · 20/07/2014 22:39

I agree OP but then I love films from that era.

Another favourite of mine is Mr Deeds Goes to Town (the original not the Adam Sandler version which sucked balls). I'm probably the exact opposite of ladylemongrab cos I love all those films she's just listed Blush

I'm afraid it's a TAAT sinister and lighthearted.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2138162-AIBU-to-go-off-a-friend-because-shes-never-heard-of-the-film-Brief-Encounter?

But actually 'sinister' would be a good word for it Wink

They're great actors, they were acting in the accepted style of that era. It's just so forced and over the top though.

I think it's a tad off putting that, in the alternate, non James Stewart world, his wife becomes - shock horror _ a librarian. How dreadful.

To Have and to Have Not.

Mind you, I prefer Victoria Wood's version of Brief Encounter to the real thing
