AIBU?

I was about to buy these: www.marksandspencer.com/girls-slim-leg-trousers-with-zip-pocket-and-stormwear-/p/p22226406

When I looked at the description:

'Sealed Hem - reinforced hem stays up for longer, so that's less work for mum!'

Gosh what lucky mums we are. I especially love the cheerful exclamation mark.

I have never sewn a hem in my life and I'm 34 and a mother of 3.

In fact MY Dad does all my sewing on of badges and shit.

I haven't a clue either I use that iron on tape stuff or ummmm get my own mum to do it, oh the shame.

CatsCantTwerk · 10/07/2014 16:05

It doesn't actually say that. It says 'makes life easier for mum'.

I dont sew so anything that will make my life easier I am happy with Grin

Can't say that it bothers me much. Even in these supposed times of equality most chores like that fall down to mum. Even if mum doesn't see them herself she's likely to take them to the dry cleaner or tailor to have them adjusted.

Sorry, I have just seen further down where it says that.

I hate sewing

wonderweb is my friend, and iron on name tapes - sorted!

Bit crap of M&S to be so sexist, to answer OP, YANBU

It does say "Sealed Hem - reinforced hem stays up for longer, so that's less work for mum!" if you click on the More Info tab.

FFS. Why does this tripe get trotted out year in, year out. Work for Mum. Nice one M&S.

DH does any sewing in this house, voluntarily. Not because he thinks he's helping me with my "work" either.

well I won't be buying uniform from M&S this year!
sorted.

I've complained via their website.

Everyday sexism.

Depressing.

Unbelievable. Glad to see gender stereotypes are alive and well.

FFS M&S DH does all the ironing in our house, including ironing on wonderweb on the shitty weak hems M&S specialise in. Less work for PARENTS means going elsewhere to buy trousers with hems that don't fall down after a week.

Alongside the casual sexism, they are admitting their trouser hems are generally shit!

I tweeted them. Depressing.

YANBU

My DH has a couple of sewing machines and I get stuff hemmed or altered at the place in the shopping centre. It's cheap hereGrin

It does grate a bit. It was probably written by an unpaid graduate intern.

Yesterday they were complaining that sales were down due to their new website. Maybe they should study the content a bit more closely. Not every mother is a 1950's housewife.

I'd probably wind up sewing myself to the garmet instead of fixing it.

Hangs head in shame :(

Report
Joysmum · 10/07/2014 16:50

Wouldn't be any less work for me, it'd save money though as we wouldn't have to pay out for alterations or to buy new.

I'm very impressed with those who sew, male or female. Unless it's glue or a stapler I don't do it!

It does suggest that previous trousers that have not had reinforced hems were expected to fall down and require sewing.

Shoddy.

I am shit at sewing. DH is better at it so does it. I also hate ironing.

If enough people tweet about it they'll remove it and there'll be an apology.
Can't believe anyone in their right mind would think that was acceptable though - shame on them! Talk about alienating your target market...

I started a thread about Clarks shoes signs - it got very little response on MN. It got plenty of support elsewhere but Clarks have refused to change them.
