Just a tiny squirt, into the lid of the can to see if I like the smell?

Apparently IABVU and it's parents like me that allow their kids to do this that cause teachers to worry for the next generation Shock

So if everyone did this we'd all be buying half empty cans of deodorant ... Most deodorant smells fine no need to smell it

I stick to the same ones for that reason so I don't end up with something awful smelling.

wish they left one at the front as a tester with tester written large and sealed the others with cellophane or something then you could sniff first and still buy a full can securely... guilty though Blush

Just get a Thai deodorant stick - much better all round......and no stinky smell of ANY sort.

Everyone does this! Can't buy without knowing if its nasty! I have been a bit told off in Boots for doing something similar though!

When some cost about £4.00 a tin I think it's perfectly reasonable.

why do you use spray deodorant? Do you like breathing it in every morning as you apply it?

SublimeCorpse · 09/07/2014 16:51

So possibly iabu. Ok.

I always buy the one I spray from though, and it's never crossed my mind - when I pick up one I'm familiar with the scent of - to be worried that someone might have had a little squirt out of it Confused

Boots told me they stopped doing the actual testers because people nicked them.

Why not smell the roll on equivalent (most brands do their ranges in spray and roll on) so no waste then?

I'm a sprayer/sniffer too Blush

But would you like it if you ended up buying one that someone else had been spraying and sniffing?

Report
WaitMonkey · 09/07/2014 17:09

YABU. I don't want to buy something you have been taking the lid of and spraying I'm afraid. It costs enough, I want my full tin.

Morethan - good point! Can't do that with body spray etc though.

Glad I'm not the only one who does it - I see loads of people doing it though and genuinely thought everyone did!

Sarah - never thought of it like that, honestly!

I'm the same with air freshener.

HTF are you supposed to know what it smells like by looking at the tin?

I don't want to buy one that goodness knows how many people have had a squirt out of already so no, I don't and YABU. I just buy ones with scents that I can be fairly sure will be OK, like cucumber or something.

I always have a spray first, but I will pick the one up from the front and smell the lid first incase someone else has had the same thought!

I have never heard of anyone doing this. It seems an odd thing to do, it isn't as though you are buying a 50 pound bottle of scent.

Just did that yesterday. No way to know if it is nice otherwise. Bought the one I sprayed but had sprayed other scents of the same stuff and left them behind. It was dry shampoo so no roll on equivalent to sniff. My first time buying too.

I don't think it is unreasonable behaviour.

It never even occurred to me to do this! I don't want to buy a can that someone has opened and sprayed someone out of, and would assume noone else would either so wouldn't dream of spraying it before buying it.

I've always done this if I want to buy a different deodorant to my usual brand, because some of the fragrances they put in them currently are absolutely rank. I want to smell clean and fresh, like I just got out of the shower, not like a super-cheap version of the sickly perfumes that are unfathomably popular now. The only way to tell is to spray the teensiest bit into the lid and have a discreet sniff. If the retailers don't like it then they need to provide testers, and put measures in place to stop people stealing them.

You can't possibly always buy the one you squirted from, otherwise what's the point of the squirt? If you'll buy it even if you don't like it then fine.

Cuteypatootey · 09/07/2014 17:52

YABU. Do you try a few crisps from a packet and then decide whether you'll buy them?

Report
AllDirections · 09/07/2014 17:55

I never do but I know that others do so I never buy the ones at the front and I always give them a shake just to check it's not half empty Grin
