To serve DH the crappy fish for tea and buy myself a nice one??

DH has asked for fish and chips for tea - I do the cooking in the house normally - and no problems with that. I make my own chips normally. Last time we went shopping, he insisted we buy some of the supermarket fish portions in breadcrumbs. I went along with it (wasn't paying attention) and then have come to the decision when it came to eating them that I don't really like them anyway (and have kept putting off eating them).

I've said if we are having fish and chips for tea, I'm going to nip to the chippy at the end of the road for a portion of curry sauce (love to dip my chips!) Would it be unreasonable for me to buy myself a lovely, fresh, battered fish and serve him the bread crumbed ones? He seems to think so - but he doesn't want a fish shop fish, he wants me to eat the freezer ones!

why does he care what you eat? What does it matter to him if he doesn't even want one anyway? I honestly don't understand his reasoning.

Hecate - his reasoning is it's pointless spending money on buying fish when we have fish in the freezer. We're trying to live relatively frugally at the minute. I can see his reasoning but the fish in the freezer won't go to waste - he'll eat it at a later date.

If he insisted on breadcrumbed ones which you don't like, I can't see the problem of you getting a nice battered fish for yourself. He may even listen next time.

It's not a massive one though. If your watching the pennies then going to the chippy to buy a fish (and they are expensive near me ) is a waste of money.

You should pay more attention while shopping. Dp puts all sorts if shit in, I just take it back out while he is not watching.

I kind of see his point. The freezer fish is cheaper than the chip shop fish, but the chip shop fish is nicer. He's making a compromise on price by buying the freezer fish. It would be unfair for you to buy an expensive, nice fish to eat in front of him because even if he likes the frozen ones they're nowhere near as nice as a real one.

You should both get fish and chips from the shop tonight or you should have something else while he has his frozen fish. Don't leave him a sad frozen breadcrumbed fish while you eat the lovely one!

Well, then if that's his argument, tell him that the money you would have spent buying him something for a meal in the future has been saved because he can eat that fish, thereby freeing up that same money to buy the fish for you tonight.

But that's a silly argument because one fish out of a pack of 4 costs about 70p, whereas one from the chip shop costs £3-4.

Softly - I love that idea but unfortunately, he is very attentive and gets very grumpy if I take out the food he has put in there. His argument is I like fish-shop fish so why don't I like supermarket fish-shop-style fish? It's NOT THE SAME THOUGH!!!!

What is wrong here is him trying to make you eat something you don't like and stopping you having something you want.

Get the fish from the fish shop. He chose the other so must have been happy to eat it. Whether you get a chippy fish or not DO NOT eat something you do not like.

I don't see the problem - he chose the fish he likes (breadcrumbed, from the freezer), and you can choose the fish that you like (in pillowy, crispy batter from the chippy).

Reached the bottom of the freezer so it's fish or mammoth piece of gammon and he's starting work in 2 hours so no go! He's laughed at these comments and is sending me to the chippy in good humour =D Hecate come back! You made us laugh x

And we've solved the argument for next time - we're going to get fillets and I'll home cook them (but still buy chip shop curry cause it's lush)
