To think Jolene's mate..

..should have kicked that man into touch rather than beg Jolene not to take him?

I am finding myself rapidly more irritated by lots of songs that I actually used to love. Still love the songs but bloody hell I want to knock some sense into them.

So AIBU? Or am I ageing out of romance?

As Dolly herself has said, it costs a lot to look that cheap. grin

There is an Archers thread, a very long running and well-populated one, very funny, over in Radio Addicts. I lurk, I should dive in smile

Harriebabe - have you ever been on the mustardland archers discussion forum?? V funny

<waves at fellow archers fans wandering around here by mistake>

Actually, OUR Jolene doesn't seem to have any friends, does she? Too much of a man's woman. Would you count Linda??

whattheseithakasmean Sat 28-Jun-14 23:56:15

Dolly is fab, defies all stereotypes by looking like she does but writing her own material, being fantastically talented, having a grounded home life and generally being utterly fab.

She looks like blond bimbo, but is a focused and clever woman, she chose not to have children because that would not have been compatible with her ambition and she has never expressed any regret. I think she is great.

Harriebabe Sat 28-Jun-14 23:51:17

Doh! bold fail.

Harriebabe Sat 28-Jun-14 23:50:21

Hmm, that's true [bold] Concrete ... plus she's not been in for ages, even Fallon seems to be auditioning without her and it's J'leen's band! Is there an Archers thread somewhere? I want to say "Oooh, what about Roy and Elizabeth?"

Sorry to hijack!

ConcreteElephant Sat 28-Jun-14 23:45:04

Archers fans...that's not Jolene though is it, it's J'leen <channels Linda>

countessduckula - your link does not work. YouTube says the video doesn't exist.

I was just going to check whether I had imagined that whole thing, but I saw it too, plus some photos of slight clothing slips where you could see them (assuming they weren't photoshopped, although I think Oprah confirmed that she had seen them or something). Dolly is one of my favourite people ever - she does loads of great work for charity, is charming but takes absolutely no bull shit, and even changes outfits for every single photo shoot she does when doing billions of interview to make sure that each interviewer/photographer gets an original image to go with their story. Love her!

It was actually when I was working in my most feminist job, with WA, (in the early-mid 90's) that I realised how misogynistic so much of my favourite music is/was. I'd just bought an LP of The Supreme's biggest hits, and as I danced around the livingroom, doing my housework with the music up a bit, singing along, it slowly dawned on me...

Mind you, a lot of modern stuff isn't much better. There's a song that's used for some car ad atm that involves removing all clothing bar high heels, I'm not familiar with the artiste or the rest of the lyrics, but my skin crawls every time it comes on the tv.

Stickaflakeinit Sat 28-Jun-14 23:05:21

I'm a staunch feminist, but I don't analyse classic songs like those mentioned in this way. They're encapsulating a feeling/mood/moment. They're not a manifesto o n how to deal with cheating bastards.

Who's to say that after she wrote this, Jolene's mate didn't LTB and go NC with the guy and Jo-bloody-lene? grin

I love those heartbreak country sings, slushy R&B etc regardless

littlebitmiffed Sat 28-Jun-14 23:02:12

<sigh> thanks now I won't be able to sleep for this song swirling round in my head all night!

ShergarAndSpies Sat 28-Jun-14 23:00:18

Did anyone else read a while ago that Dolly is covered in pretty 'girly' tattoos all over her arms and chest?

But she refuses to show them off, hence always wearing long sleeves.

Weird huh?

countessduckula Sat 28-Jun-14 22:45:34

I utterly love Dolly, but I love this song more. I love how pleased with herself Loretta looks while she's singing!

And I don't love metal/heavy rock/whatever, but I saw Lana Del Rey earlier, and she looked fed up. And Metallica at least look fun. But then I'm old, and I don't get out much! grin

CerealMom Sat 28-Jun-14 22:33:59

If I could have a girly night in/dinner party, Dolly and Sandi Totsvig (sp?) would be top of my list. Interesting, witty and funny.

JamNan Sat 28-Jun-14 22:28:08

Lordy I thought you were talking about the Archers

BankWadger Sat 28-Jun-14 22:24:34

Please don't stab BankWadgers! I felt all funny reading that.

I've heard the bank teller story before yet didn't know Dolly was married. Go figure.

WanderingAway Sat 28-Jun-14 22:22:09

I much prefer whitney's version of I will always love you.

Harriebabe Sat 28-Jun-14 22:12:37

Thought I'd missed something important on The Archers for a minute ....

EssexEmmaB Sat 28-Jun-14 22:07:28

Nousernameforme Sat 28-Jun-14 21:28:08

OldLadyKnowsSomething Sat 28-Jun-14 21:09:09

Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel so uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired

Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But you're the key to my peace of mind

'Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along, to claim it
I didn't know just what was wrong with me
'Til your kiss helped me name it

Now I'm no longer doubtful of what I'm living for
And if I make you happy I don't need to do more

'Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

Oh, baby, what you done to me?
You make me feel so good inside
And I just wanna be close to you
You make me feel so alive

You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sat 28-Jun-14 21:04:28

'YOU make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman' is another one with a great tune but the lyrics from a woman highly dependant on someone else for her happiness and sense of identity. (I can never remember the right words when singing loudly iver the radio in the car, so not that it has moved me that deeply).
