I don't doubt its validity but I am uncomfortable with the portrayal and assumption, inherent in the portrayal, that child abuse happens in high rise council flats.

You'll never see it next door to you in leafy suburbia. Oh no.

Sorry to spook you guys, it's a video promoting Kids Company raising awareness of their campaign to reform the child protection system. As a social worker I have found it hard to watch, especially the bit where the social workers try to get in.

Mytwo, agree; I am sure that for max impact in shortest time (video time I mean) the environs were carefully selected

No no don't apologise, it's a Friday night where weird things sometimes get dropped onto the boards

wherethewildthingis · 28/06/2014 00:08

Mytwo, I agree that child abuse happens everywhere. I felt in this film, that environment was chosen to show that all of society holds some responsibility for the conditions children live in, if you see what I mean?

I actually hadn't thought about the stereotyping aspect

But yes, maybe the video should show a wider range of living environments.

In fact it definitely should.

soontobesix please try to listen to this film and actually do what it says and see the child. The reality is,that the majority of abused and neglected children live in poverty. It is not a stereotype to say that, it is true. This film sheds light on the fact that many children live in poverty which we could all address, of we wanted to.

It is extremely Sad

Yes but it's also reinforcing the myth that just because you live in a council flat, you and your family are living in poverty.

It is a very thought provoking video but also quite insulting to the many decent council tenants, who don't abuse or starve their kids.

People living on the bread line are already under constant attack from stupid tv shows like 'Benefits Street' and the constant shit from the Daily Mail.

This video really should show a wider range of living environments imo.

SoonToBeSix · 28/06/2014 00:44

But do they wildthings or is it just that more children who ss know about either at the time or tragically too late come from a background of poverty.
There are many forms of abuse and some are much more easily hidden. Children from " respectable families" also need to be seen.

FFS I'm sure the charity will be more than happy to take your feedback on their video, if it's accompanied by a signature on the petition. Not signing a petition that could save lives, because you don't like the video that promotes it, is daft.

It's a very powerful, quite shocking video, OP.

I've read the thread twice now and nowhere have I seen anyone say they're not going to sign the petition Confused

For the record, I've signed it but I still think the stereotyping is unhelpful to the very cause they are trying to promote.

SoonToBeSix · 28/06/2014 00:58

Moomin I didn't say I wouldn't sign it , I just disagree with the imagery not the message.

Soontobesix, I take your point that abuse is easier to hide in affluent families. I think however that where a child lives in poverty, they are more likely to experience the kind of multiple deprivation shown in the film- neglect and poor living conditions alongside other forms of abuse.
I think this film makes a good point by showing the child living in poor conditions, that this is something that we are all responsible for as a society. I don't think the intention is to stereotype. Obviously, the majority of families who experience poverty have good parents who meet their children's needs in very difficult circumstances.

I am usually doubtful of the power of a petition and (aware that this will cause ructions) don't see what this one will do either.

I don't disagree with the message I just don't see why a petition will make a difference.

The current obsession with them bemuses me, I can only see that the number of them reduces their impact.

This topic does not need a petition, it needs political will to see something done on a daily basis. That doesn't need awareness raising, it needs old fashioned politics rather than our current soundbite politics. I fear all this will do, ironically, is give another face a thing to sign up to..... and do nothing with.

wherethewildthingis · 28/06/2014 12:14

I disagree that awareness raising isn't needed, actually awareness is exactly what is needed. People.need to look around at the child in their child's class, who lives down the road, that they see in the supermarket.... Look, carefully, and go beyond that niggling feeling that "something isn't right", and take some action.
