I dearly wish they would stop cowering, quivering, vacillating, hovering uncertainly in the middle of the road, wobbling, wibbling and wavering.

I expect they'll now start wetly making noises about immigrations and referendums, pandering to the ukip voters rather than having the guts to argue that immigration and Europe are not the biggest problems we face.

Labour is supposed to be the party of the working people, the majority of us. I am so disgusted with them for missing an open goal and I'm terrified of a Tory/UKIP coalition. A year to go! Some guts please Labour! Some policies! Some swagger!

Nick Clegg tried the "party of in versus the party of out" stuff during the campaign. It didn't work, and energised UKIP.

I hope Ed Miliband does what you suggest - it would lead to a swift, decisive kick in the ballots, rather than the slow bleeding of votes to UKIP and the Tories which is happening now.

They need a strong leader. Never has the party missed John Smith as badly as now. I suspect David would have been (marginally) better than Ed but they need to act quickly. Act strong. They're not really the party of the working class anymore - which I think is the root of why the working class are looking for a new party. I don't know why they don't just stand tall and give facts - as far as I know the "immigrants" as a whole bring money into the country by working and paying taxes - we'd be worse off without them. (Aside from having a load of unfilled jobs that British workers won't do). I'm sick of mainstream politicians talking lots and saying nothing. No clear idea of what they stand for. Just a lot of sniping at each other in the hope you'll pick them as the least bad option. British politics is a bloody shambles at the moment.

In my mind Milliband is a very very clever man. He's an excellent strategist and is very much led by evidence to seek equality. BUT he has the charisma of a potato. He should be behind the scenes supporting someone who has go it.

Trouble is I don't know who what is? Yet the Cooper has potential but her husband is often an embarrassment. Alan Milburn had potential but is gone. Johann Lamont in Scotland just isn't making headway against slippery Salmond.

I think either Miliband was a bad choice- in fact all the leadership contenders were weak in one way or another- I'm so sick of hearing Labour politicians give mealy mouthed, over cautious, rabbits in the headlights answers to anything they are asked. Tristam Hunt on Question Time flip flopping pathetically over the travesty of free schools on Thursday was a case in point. Free schools!!!! It should have been an open goal! But since the LABOUR party haven't decided yet whether moving to privatising the education system by handing if over to any old Tom, Dick or Toby, and destroying teachers' terms and conditions at the same time is a good thing or a bad thing yet, they can't say anything. It's so depressing.

The thing is, though, they've had their best local election results since 1998, when Blair was probably flying highest. They've gained 338 seats and 6 councils in addition to the councils where they previously had power, compared with UKIP's 161 seats and no councils. I must confess to having difficulty in understanding precisely why this is viewed as such a Labour failure and a UKIP triumph.

I did vote Labour in the last general election but I have not been impressed by them of late. Miliband must go. They must address the concerns of society. And stop saying if only we understood then we would vote Labour. Stop the patronising.
