to feel scared for our girls when kicking prostitutes in a video game

gets you more points.

Did anyone see the program about women's roles in video games? I was utterly horrified when I saw the imagery of how women are portrayed as sexual objects and kicking female prostitutes to get your money back earned you points. I was also shocked that the teen girls interviewed said it was normal for them to be molested by boys.

AIBU to think that we should be campaigning against some of this stuff?

YANBU.

Imagine if it were kicking ethnic minorities. Sexism to that extent should be a hate crime.

Yes, I believe so.

MN should get on something about it...a campaign against violence towards women in video games. HUGELY important.

Yanbu
I cant believe that is an actual game.

DP played that game when it came out and I was genuinely taken aback by how vicious it was, and the appalling language.

What was even worse was that I was teaching eight year old boys at the time, and I would routinely overhear them talking about it too.

I also think a campaign is needed...

Ooh good TeacherMum that's a few of us so far then...any more agree that there needs to be a campaign about this? If we get enough people agreeing then we can approach MN about it. Might take a few days of thread bumping mind.

Can anyone find a link to the one I'm talking about? It was awful!

There was a video with a driver purposely running into a girl until she was dead, then kicking her in order to get his money back.

What aged children will have easy access to this kind of stuff and what message about women does it send?

God, its disgusting. Ds, 14 isn't allowed GTA games but many of his classmates have them. It makes me want to weep for my daughters, sexism is alive and kicking (no pun intended).

Imagine if it were kicking ethnic minorities. Sexism to that extent should be a hate crime. this from Mrswinnibago sums it up nicely.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is an age restricted purchase and not available to under 18s. Unless an adult purchases it for them, of course.

I am on board. I've never played a video game in my life, but that is just sickening. How do we begin this campaign?

Should we first get enough people interested?

Duckie I think the worst thing is that many kids, especially those with older siblings will have access to this game...sometimes their parents know about it and see nothing wrong in it because "it's just a game" I'm talking under tens.

Amrapaali the best thing to do is to get many Mumsnetters in agreement and then approach Mumsnet HQ about it so they back us in an official campaign...that means a lot of media attention such as that garnered by Let Toys Be Toys and "This is My Child" which are both successful campaigns which began on this site.

I agree it is disgusting but as has been pointed out it is an 18 rated game and should only be available to adults who understand it is fiction.

I'd back a campaign to inform parents what could be in the 18 rated games they buy their DC, as I'm appalled at 8 year olds having access to this.

Toast even so...it's completely unacceptable...even if the age restriction were in any way enforceable...which it is not.

YANBU.

Kind of proved her point about misogyny in video games, didn't it?

The whole thing is just appalling.

What are people doing playing these games for fun? Whatever age?

"Imagine if it were kicking ethnic minorities"

Actually.... there's a section in the game where your task is to hold up a convenience store. If you shoot bullets around the shopkeeper, he gives you the money faster... :)

Coffee do you think this type of hatred towards women is acceptable as long as those playing it are over 18 then?? Shock

Report
FoxSticks · 13/05/2014 13:21

I didn't see the programme but it sounds interesting, in a dreadful way obviously. When was it on?

Report
MrsWinnibago · 13/05/2014 13:23

Sabrina thanks for the link....shocking and all the more reason to take it on I think.
