The brilliant Michael Rosen on UKIP.

l“I sometimes fear that people might think that fascism arrives in fancy dress worn by grotesques and monsters as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis. Fascism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you…It doesn’t walk in saying, “Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution.”

I might use that next time someone says they're going to vote for them.

I wish I had last time I met one. It was a great aunt at DD's first birthday. Usually I would ignore politics at a family do, but UKIP and supporters need challenging.

It's a sorry state of affairs when a far-right party is getting support here, I only hope the split the Tory vote enough to keep them out of power.

isn't it more likely to be traditional labour voters that swing to ukip? After all isn't their target market the traditional working class areas that are more heavily affected by immigration?

I don't see what UKIP has to do with Nazism any more than Labour or the Tories do. What in that statement is different to what people hoped of New Labour when they won the 1997 election?

You don't see how UKIP - with policy gems such as 'repelling the human rights act' 'separate, segregated 'care' communities for those with disabilities' and decriminalisation of rape - could be any different than other parties?

Vintagecakeisstillnice · 12/05/2014 08:48

I want that on a poster.

Really I will C&P it for me and mine, but how wonderful if this was delivered with the UKIP flyers

I don't know anyone who doesn't want the HRA act repealed! It's a charter for criminals, what rights does it give law-abiding people that they didn't have before it was introduced?

As for the latter 2 things, I am not aware of either of them being official UKIP policy. Just speculation and people running their mouths.

The Human Rights Act is a charter for criminals?

I shall be voting for them on May 22nd. As will many, many others. You are slurring about 30% of the electorate (according to polls) as fascist. The reaction on MN to UKIP is beyond hysterical.

The congregate communities for people with a learning disability was in their manifesto...how is that speculation?

I'm Hmm to some people's responses to supporters of UKIP.

They have a different political view than you. So fucking what?

And YY to the HRA. A immigrant rapist couldn't be deported because the fat cats in Brussels thought he had a right to live here...because he had a cat.

Fuck off to the far side of fuck.

This silly hysteria around UKIP will encourage more people to vote for them.

The UKIP hysteria on Mumsnet is just getting ridiculous now.

I wish UKIP could have its own section on here so I could hide it - or maybe I wouldn't - the inevitable, 'UKIP ate my granny' titles will make me smile.

The 2010 manifesto outlines their proposals wrt care communities.

I would encourage you to actually read up on what they stand for before you spout on about hysterical anti - UKIP voters.

We're hysterical because it is Fucking terrifying that people are stupid enough to not be able to see past their half baked ill though out plans on immigration.

I presume anyone voting for UKIP is pretty ignorant. Nobody with all the facts and a grasp if common sence could think they're a viable option.

Its like what Stewart Lee said when talking of how when people used to make protest votes it was for nice parties who probably wouldn't get in like the green party on monster raving loonies. He said "it's like shitting in your hotel bed as a protest against bad service, then realising you've now got to sleep in a shitted bed"

Well the first one is part of their manifesto (the second being the views of their largest donor), so its good to know that you know what you are voting for!

interesting point newmummy222 but I think a lot of upperclass voters are also attracted to UKIP because of the tax breaks

That's as ridiculous as asking if supporters of the royal family would have voted for the Nazis. I mean, it's not as if they ever hailed from Germany, or supported the party, or dressed as Nazis for a fancy dress party for a larf is it? Oh, hang on....

Disagree with their politics, by all means, but to link them to the Nazi party (presumably you understand exactly what the Nazis did to the Jewish people?) is obscene.

Yes, the cat story was bollocks.

I love the Human Rights Act. It protects all of us from unfair and discriminatory treatment, and people who mock it clearly have no understanding of what it's like to live in a country where human rights are ignored and abused.

I don't think UKIP are the Nazis yet but the loss of public trust in mainstream parties leading to votes for swivel-eyed extremists is certainly rather reminiscent of what happened in early 1930s Germany.

"A immigrant rapist couldn't be deported because the fat cats in Brussels thought he had a right to live here...because he had a cat."

That's all it took them to tell you, to get you to happily give up your legal rights to challenge your own government?

I'd be interested to see your source on that.

Yes I think it will be, as usual the poor has suffered the most.

I think Browns comment to that lady turned many away too.
