AIBU?

Stung by a HORNET! AIBU to never come out of spare room again?

Last night at around 3am I was fast asleep and minding by own business when all of a sudden I felt a pain in my side as if someone were jamming a huge shard of glass into me. I jumped up, turned on the lights, and shouted to my DH "some fucker just bit me!". At that exact moment a massive hornet flew up and buzzed around the room and DH and I both screamed and ran out.

I looked at my back and it was red and swollen with white bumps. Now five hours later the swelling has gone down but it still hurts a bit.

Luckily the bed in the spare room was made up so we slept there and this morning DH the hero went back and killed the hornet with rolled up newspaper. He brought me the body and after intensive googling it was definitely a hornet, probably a queen. At first we had thought it was a wasp but it didn't match the photos or descriptions. It was really big with brown and mustard yellow markings and kind of fuzzy. Hideous thing!

Now I am lying in the spare room with my iPad that DH rescued. I'm too scared to come out and am definitely not sleeping in the main bedroom ever again. DH had the window open a few times last week and he thinks it was just one that flew in. But what if there is a big nest of them in the wall or something??

Really quite scary it was. In all seriousness, though, I dread to think about something like that getting into a child's room.

Oh god that's like my worst nightmare, I have a fear of wasps or anything similar like bees. YANBU, you just never know what might be lurking...

YANBU.
Stay in the spare bedroom. Forever.
Get food delivered - your iPad will sustain you (make sure you have the charger with you otherwise you're dooooooomed)
You can have a chamber pot under the bed, this can be emptied in to the streets over night when there are no flying insects

I don't see why you'd ever need to come out again.

I was stung by one once on the palm of my hand. It was lurking on the back of a dining room chair and got me when I put my hand on it. This was about 3 years ago. I still check the chair every time Grin

ThePear, that might be messy Grin

We converted our house a few years ago and when stud walls came down upstairs, we found 2 mahoosive wasps' nests - think 1x1 ft inside the cavity. They were clearly old and deserted, but still turned my stomach. There were in the wall of the tiny box room that had served as precious preemie DS2's nursery… Shock

How rude of it when you were innocently sleeping!

Sounds horrible Thanks

I would move house Grin

I always check chairs before sitting down as I was once going to sit down in my armchair first thing in the morning & very nearly didn't notice a massohoosive wolf spider sitting there
I still shudder at the memory
I yelled dh until he woke up & moved it

Luckily we are moving house, in fact! I just have to survive four more weeks here. Thank god we are getting out of here soon Grin.

Thanks for the flowers, Fanjo, but I will keep them outside in case they attract hornets.

Pacific, that's a chilling tale.

Ah, moving house - ideal! Smile

I gather emptying chamberpots in the street has not been the done thing since the Middle Ages anyway. Who knew?! Wink
