AIBU?

not feeding "meat" to niece and nephew when they stay for one night

Been vegan for 9 years and never have meat in the house.

Should I be expected to provide a special meat meal for a 3 and 7 yo when they stay over? Rather than just what I would eat, they would be getting a balanced diet and 10+ fruit veg portions.

Brother in law has kind of suggested it would be unhealthy not to have meat for 24 hours...

YANBU, if BIL feels strongly about it he can stay elsewhere and just meet up.

Depends.Do they accommodate your veganism when you are at their house?

Hmmm of course YANBU and I ow understand the reason behind your incredibly stupid post on the other thread Grin

Well, would you expect a special meal to be provided for you if you stayed away from home for a day?

Well, if they are dead before the end of tomorrow you can tell him he had a point!

Twonk! BIL, that is!

It's only 24 hours. It won't kill them not to have any meat for 24 hours. Hmm
(This coming from a meat eater.) Your BIL should be grateful for the childcare, not moaning at the food options! As long as they get plenty of good, healthy food they'll survive!

Clearly YANBU, but I'd be tempted to cheat with quorn bolognese - trying to tempt other people's DC with meals outside their comfort zone always ends in tears for me.

No don't make meat meals for them - there is no need at all. Your BIL is odd.

24 hours meat-free is unhealthy? Is he the sort of chap who chainsaws up a pig for breakfast?

Report
justtoomessy · 21/04/2014 17:12

No od course not. My son gets whatever people eat in their house and tough if he doesn't like it so not having meat is not an issue. Plus having a break from meat is probably good for them.

Some people are so damn precious about their children its scary.

No they don't sally! I've been presented with a plate full of peas and carrots as a main meal.

Sorry yes that was a joke on the other thread, glad you found it stupid, its the views I have to put up with.

YANBU - one night will make zero difference to them, and might actually be a healthy change

Fine with no meat. But yabu serving 10 portions of fruit and veg unless this is their normal diet. I'd expect them to get diahorrea from that. Just do something simple like beans on toast with grated cheese or something.

YANBU to not feed them meat.

However, I assume you are also happy to not be given something "special" when you visit them - ie you would be happy to just have the same as them but without the animal product part.

I'm vegan and if you eat a healthy diet, being meat eating/vegan/vege doesn't mean that you do, then you know the answer to this.

Unless your DN's eat such a restricted diet that leaving the meat out would leave them hungry, then don't serve meat.

It would take longer than three days to be adversely effected by a lack of any nutrition group.

But this would only happen if very few foods were eaten and they were meat.

Is your BIL coming too? If so, suspect this is actually more about him being greedy!

Really puruple 10 is too much?

I'm skint and usually manage 20-30 a day.

Might need to offer something a bit more child friendly than your own meal if you want them to eat. But that doesn't need to be non-vegan. (Chip butties?) I'd be tempted to make sure they had food they enjoyed tbh, as it will give them a positive impression of veganism.
