I'd take it as a compliment (regardless of intent). Babies are supposed to be fat until they start walking. How could anyone not love their gorgeous chunky thighs? Your mil is being silly.

My doctor said "ooh I love a fat baby!" Whilst looking at my son of about 5 months.

I'd rather he be fat than underweight (at this age). He's one now and looks perfect. Just shrug it off.

My SIL took the piss out of DS' hairline (?!) when he was tiny and I almost scalped her in a hormonal rage.

I had the fattest baby I have ever seen.

He was ebf and by 6 months he was gargantuan. Complete strangers would regularly comment on his corpulence, but all I ever got from gps or health visitors was that he was perfect.

They soon lose it once they get mobile.

Ultimately she is probably saying it with the best of intentions so try not to take it to heart too much.

Dd1 was a fat little baby, ds was a skinny one, people were always commenting on it. The irony being she was a rubbish feeder and he was great!

Fat babies are the best. I have one, so I think I can say this.
It IS weird to ask whether you're feeding them too much though (unless you really are; like melted down lard in a bottle or something)

People always comment on the size of my six month old; they think he's older. I don't mind - he is surprisingly large, and his popeye forearms and super cheeks are the absolute best.

We had an influx of Townies to the village and one of the Yummy Mummies said summat like "how are you coping with your obese baby?" Complete with head tilt.

Ignore MIL OP. I have noticed, were babies are concerned, people just love to put their 10pence in... (Regardless of wether it is remotely logical) Smile and nod. I saw that on here, just smile and nod, and after trying a few times it really does work! Shuts them up and you obviously ignore it completely.

Why would you feed a rapidly growing baby less? I'll feed any child until its full.

My dm got comments about my weight as a baby (I was on toddler scales way before I was a toddler) but she said the mums feeding how much the HV told them to feed had scrawny looking babies who fussed a lot.

It was the 70's so it was four hourly feeds all the way.

Most babies are fat. Usually they slim down once they start getting mobile.

DS2 is 7 months old and I think he looks very fat - but when he was weighed and measured last week, the HV said that he was perfectly in proportion because his weight and height were both on the same centile.

But I'd be definitely be annoyed at the suggestion that a 4.5 month old baby should be on some sort of diet. That's just ridiculous.

We got the too skinny comments from health visitors in the days when weight charge were based on bottle fed over fed babies rather than normal breast fed ones. You cannot win either way.
