Years and years ago I worked as a waitress in a cafe.

A very rude woman worked in the art gallery next door and one day she came in and asked me, "Is the ham ... NICE?"

I said, "Well yes, it is." To be honest I didn't know what she meant. "I can only tell you that everything we serve here in the cafe is nice."

She got huffy and said, "NO, is the ham NICE?"

"Yes?"

She didn't believe me and stormed out.

I had never understood what she meant but have often thought of her when seeing 'naice ham' jokes here on Mumsnet and wondering if she's still such a nasty old cow

Now I suddenly realise that she was asking if it was actual ham, or if it was processed crap from a packet (it wasn't). And I can't believe it. Was she really that inarticulate, or am I still missing something about naice/not naice ham that everyone knows except me? Grin

You mean, actuall ham that gets cut off a pig, as opposed to the sort that pours out of a tap, into a mould, and if you look hard you can see air bubbles in it. Nice ham vs tap ham. Pig ham vs hamwidge ham.

Letsgotostonehenge, I think ham honks because of the sulpher they use to cure it. It has to be wafted for a bit before it is truly naice.
