I expect they've used your plates to steal some petrol.

It happened to me. I had to drive 300 miles home with no plates.

Agree with BrianTheMole, they generally steal them to get petrol, make sure you let the police know.

Can't Halfords do them for you? Think you need your log book to prove ownership.

Well, people shouldn't steal full stop really, regardless of what it is. I'm sorry you have been a victim of crime.

Police told me I could drive as long as I made a clear sign with registration number to put in back windscreen. Also, can't you get some new ones made today in Parkers or Halfords? We had some done same day, just had to show paperwork to prove vehicle was ours. Weirdly whoever stole mine nevr appeared to use them, or at least nothing involving our plates was ever reported.

Have you reported it to the police? My dad had his plates stolen a few weeks back and he was allowed to drive his car until he could get new ones. Might be worth checking so you don't have to miss out on your plans

Agree with others that you must, must, must report them stolen. People driving with stolen plates are probably up to other badness... You need to be able to dissociate yourself from it.

Company I used to work for had this done on one of the cars. They used the plates on stolen cars. It's quite common. Call the police and report it.

We had this happen. We reported it to the police, and we were able to carry on driving it until dh got to Halfords to get a new plate. Iirc, we had the crime report number with us, as the police could use that to check we'd reported the Numberplate theft (and presumably when, so they knew we weren't procrastinating about replacing it.

We didn't have any problems at all.

You could also make a temporary set of plates from cardboard to use in the meantime.

Have reported it to the police, the one place we could get it done today was closing in fifteen minutes and we couldn't have got there in time. not

Is there a Halfords where you are? I'm sure they can do them.

Yabu! Of course people can steal number plates off cars if they feel like it.

Check with your local police, but I suspect you would still be allowed to drive your car, until you can get the new plate - I'd be surprised if you couldn't.

Mintyy you took the words right out of my mouth! Grin

Goodie my sympathies, bloody irritating, but's it's hard to think that anybody would think you were being unreasonable to be pissed off about it!

Police told us not to drive the car, it is funny we do have a Halfords and they do sell car parts but they are a cimpltely different company to the one in the UK and they arenit licensed to make number plates, only one place in our city is.

My Dh was more upset than me, it just ruined our afternoon and means we will have to get the bus tomorrow.
I never thought about stealing petrol.

People shouldn't steal anything. That's what thieves do, ruin peoples' days. Hope you get it sorted out OK OP.

cozietoesie · 12/04/2014 19:53

They might be wanting to steal petrol but there could be other nefarious purposes as well. If they have a ringer car, nicking your plates is quicker and easier than having some made.

You did well to report the theft to the police.

We had this happen years ago. We replaced plates and buggers nicked them again! Dh just drove without as he enjoyed not being nabbed by speed cameras. (I did not approve.)

This happened to a friend of mine and a car with her stolen number plates on was used as a getaway car following a robbery. She regularly gets stopped by the police now, because some alert has been triggered by her plates. She has to carry all her paperwork with her all the time in the car - registration docs and crime number etc for the theft - otherwise it's a right faff. You definitely did the right thing in reporting it!
