AIBU?

To let dcs go without tea?

One says she can't possibly decide what she wants after I told her she wasn't having jam on toast for her main meal. She had a chocolate spread sandwich today for lunch as a treat, she's not having sugar on bread for tea.

The other one asked for pasta, which I did to the usual requirements, and has now left the best part of it on the plate and gone off whining that it doesn't tase the same. Admitedly it was wholemeal pasta but once it's cooked you can't tell.

They're seven and five. I've clearly let them run rings around me haven't I?

Hmm

No. They're 7 and 5 and so are very fickle. One minute they love something, next it'll be too spicy/weird. My DD currently hates toast (how?).

They'll be fine.

Sugar girl can go hungry. For the sin of "I can't possibly decide" - obviously said in that Made in Chelsea, TOWIE manner that automatically gets any human being demoted to 'Erk'.

But you are being absolutely, totally, utterly Fucking U if you seriously think that wholemeal pasta tastes the same as the real stuff just because you cook it.

Total Freakin Biatch of a Mum for that dirty trick Smile

Sounds like they are typical kidlets to me!! Mine (5&3) do this occasionally so I call their bluff and give them nowt.

They'll be fine. Maybe just very hungry in the morning.

You haven't let them go without dinner. They've chosen not to eat the pasta you've made for them. Big difference.

Stop fussing over them is my advice.

I don't think wholemeal tastes the same but they are only small children so I think it goes with the territory

I would do one more choice

Oh dear, who's in charge there? They're certainly not going to die, so stick to your guns. If they're hungry they'll eat the food put in front of them - your house, your rules! Not easy being a parent but start exercising some authority and pop some cotton wool in your ears.

Why are you letting them decide what they get for tea?!

Tell them what they are eating and that's that. You aren't a bloody café as my mum would say!

My 2 year old is currently screaming that she's hungry having refused to eat the pasta bake she ASKED for, and normally loves. I'm not giving her the bagels she's after. I'm mean. Wholemeal pasta is nasty though!

No, yanbu. As SaucyJack said, the food is there for them, they are just choosing not to eat it. As soon as kids start turning their nose up at food so that meals end up being re-cooked to suit their whims, it will never end. Don't give in!

We always either have wholemeal pasta or dried pasta. Not much difference usually.

Pasta hater lied and said she'd eaten it when she had in fact tipped the whole plateful in the bin. I could have bloody well eaten it. My dinner is a long way away after I've negotiated tonight's tantrum and I'm bloody hungry. Hmm

They've gone to bed. And once I've necked a big glass of wine that's exactly where I'm headed.

Christ, we haven't even started the holidays yet. And dh is away for another two weeks.

My dsc's are very used to going without dinner as one week they will eat sausages and the next week they hate them - rule for all the kids (and adults) is eat it or go hungry.

Brown pasta is very nasty.

YABVVU to try to con any poor child into eating it.

Don't you just cook one family meal? Do you cook different things for different people? Crazy if so

Report
magimedi · 03/04/2014 19:54

One says she can't possibly decide what she wants

You give them a choice?

You ask them what they want for tea?

YABVVU (and mad Grin )

Dish it up - the only choice (taking into account genuine loathings) for my DS was take it or leave it.

Rexandralpf · 03/04/2014 20:13

I agree magi. Mine all had fish pie tonight, they all had chicken casserole yesterday and tomorrow we will all be having curry.

I know, I know.

I took the viewpoint that it was easier to get them to eat something that they'd asked for, as opposed to making them eat something they didn't want.

I realise now the error of my ways.

We do all sit down and have a family meal together perhaps two or three times a week, when I do something that I know everybody likes. The rest of the time I just ask them, especially if they're hungry straight after school and dh and I aren't eating till he comes home later.
