To have my cracked tooth sorted under sedation?

I have a dentist phobia(a bad one).

Last time I had work done 20 or 30 years ago pre dc I fainted.

Anyhow I have a sore tooth with no decay.My lovely dentist thinks it may have cracked under the filling which isn't deep.She wants to drill it out and refill it which sounds bloody awful to me.

She broached the subject of the sedation clinic(pampered princess clinic according to dp who has had root canal done normally). The thought of somebody other than my normal dentist doing it is equally scary.

I've had 2 c/s awake and countless fertility procedures including ovarian drilling and egg collection.

Sooo what to do?Would I be unreasonable to have it under sedation or would it be just as bad,wasting their time etc?

YANBU but in my experience sedation does not cure the phobia whereas getting it done normally does (because it is really nowhere near as bad as you think). If you always have sedation it could turn out pretty expensive over the course of your life!

Also you've got to consider why you have a phobia. If it is due to feeling out of control sedation will not necessarily help.

Btw I had such a bad phobia that I cried hysterically at check ups. I recently had a root canal and crown done without sedation and was completely fine, so it can be done.

I have had dental treatment under sedation twice and it was fine. I have been brave enough recently to have a small filling without sedation but am not brave enough to have anything more complicated without sedation.
It is very expensive though. But worth it.
I know it doesnt cure the phobia but I am 57 and dont think I will ever be cured.

What is sedation like,are you more under than a c/s?She said I won't rem anything but the thought of some strange dentist drilling out my tooth whilst I'm trapped and unable to move but not asleep seems petrifying .Strangely if I was fully asleep it wouldn't seem so bad.

I have anything more than a filling done under sedation at the dentist.

If the offer is there you don't owe anyone any explanations.

Also how good are sedation dentists?My dentist is your dream dentist,my dc have her.Would a sedation one be as good?

Retro I feel as asleep as under a GA.

I was fully awake for c section under spinal.

I get it within the normal band of treatment under the nhs as I a referred by the dentist.

Sedation dentists are used to dealing with nervous patients, so very good imo.

About six months ago I had a tooth out under sedation which also needed three stitches, it cost £400 on the NHS

I think that hurt more that the tooth......

I don't know exactly how much it is privately but I've heard it's expensive. As you're NHS I'm guessing it won't cost you. Don't feel guilty for using a service your dentist has offered you. Btw I don't think the work you need will be any different to having a filling. She will just drill the filling out, possibly a bit more, and fill it back up again. tbh even having a root canal only feels like having a filling but it takes aaaages. No pain though.

Price - depends if there is an NHS sedation clinic in your area (I am in Devon and there are 2 for the whole of Devon).
You will not be asleep - just not really aware of what is going on. You will need a chaperone to take you, fetch you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. After you have had the treatment you will be encouraged to go home and sleep and then you will forget you have even had it done and then you will THINK you were asleep through it.

It does cost on the nhs, but dont know of current cost. My extraction was 10 years ago and it was £100. You will be completely out for a couple of minutes and not know what is happening.

Immediately afterwards I have no awareness of anything having been done!

Last time I was convinced it hadn't actually even been done.

I am pretty stoned for a while afterwards, but it's not unpleasant.

For check ups I take headphones and play loud music. My dentist is extremely sympathetic but I am still shaky and nauseous for a few days before I go.

It's the best. Primarily it's superb because it makes a good hour or more of treatment feel like a couple of minutes.

£400 isn't an NHS charge in England so if you were sedated and paid that it wasn't NHS.

A dentist has to have a special contract with the NHS to do sedation which is paid for my the NHS (with your patient charge on top) the NHS don't commission much in the way of sedation because it's expensive.

Hope you find someone, have you ever had a filling without sedation?

This will be just the same as a normal filling, the crack doesn't make any difference to the process. Any chance you'd let your amazing dentist have a go?

I have to say that the reason I am referred us because for some reason dental anaesthesia is not fully effective on me.

I'm a right coward and always have things done under conscious sedation - drip in back of hand, count backwards to ten, hit four and then wake up with tooth sorted! Sometimes feel a little dizzy afterwards (BP drops) but other than that, no problems.

MrsMorton Our dentist doesn't do sedation, I was referred to the local clinic and my dentist said 'I think if you pay something like £50 you can jump the queue'.

Went to the clinic for initial assessment and was told the waiting list for sedation was 'months' long, I asked what if I paid, as per what my dentist had said, and was told I could have done the following week and the cost would be £400.

My dentist was when I next went and told him the cost, my sister who is a hygenist was also .

That was me with no spending money for a month.
