My DS starts school this year and his primary school has an unprecedented intake and his class will be 22. Reassure me that that's ok?

Moleyjay Fri 28-Mar-14 20:12:17

Seriously?! Most classes are 30!

PumpkinPie2013 Fri 28-Mar-14 20:13:14

22 is good imo

I've taught in schools with class sizes of 35 with one teacher and one TA shock

What particularly is worrying you?

formerbabe Fri 28-Mar-14 20:13:29

Is it private school?

hooochycoo Fri 28-Mar-14 20:13:53

Really? Good! Talk to me, I'm a novice at this and most people round here are up in arms

LST Fri 28-Mar-14 20:14:08

Christ I was in a class of 36 at my primary school!

22 is a walk in the park. I dream of 22.

YABU

22 is great

hooochycoo Fri 28-Mar-14 20:14:36

No not a private school

rollonthesummer Fri 28-Mar-14 20:15:10

Is this a private school?

What size had the class been in previous years?

LST Fri 28-Mar-14 20:15:15

Sorry posted too soon.

We are all really close even now. It was nice to have so many friends smile

hooochycoo Fri 28-Mar-14 20:15:28

Well this is reassuring! :-)

Megrim Fri 28-Mar-14 20:15:31

I was in a class of 40.

22? Pfft.

NewtRipley Fri 28-Mar-14 20:15:52

22 is what happens in our school when some children (8 0r so) are out at a choir rehearsal or something. It makes the classroom so much quieter and more manageable

You need to earn mega bucks and pay for private, or get used to this and higher.

rollonthesummer Fri 28-Mar-14 20:16:25

Are you worried it's too small or too big. This is an odd post really, OP. You must know that most state school classes are about 30!? What do you expect people to say?!

formerbabe Fri 28-Mar-14 20:16:33

I went to private school...I think we had 24 in my class.

Every state school where I live has 30 to a class.

Goblinchild Fri 28-Mar-14 20:16:43

There was a time when they tried to keep reception numbers as low as possible, but 22 is a lovely number. Not too small to have friendship choices, or too large to struggle with individual attention. What TA support will they have?

Moleyjay Fri 28-Mar-14 20:17:37

The legal limit for a ks1 class is 30. If school is fully subscribed ( and tbh most of the good ones all are) then the class will have 30!

CalamitouslyWrong Fri 28-Mar-14 20:17:43

One of DS1's primary schools had 18 in the class. It was great.

Fairenuff Fri 28-Mar-14 20:18:04

Are you in the uk? Where are there state schools with only 22 in a class?

Pipbin Fri 28-Mar-14 20:18:27

22 is a lovely size. I had 20 in my class last year and 26 this year.
20 was a great size. Big enough to be interesting for the children and me, but small enough to be able to get through readers etc in a week.

Finola1step Fri 28-Mar-14 20:18:43

Are you having a laugh?

State school legally allows 30 children to 1 teacher. Who does not now need to be a qualified teacher thanks to this current government.

Most schools are about 28-30. Many schools are pushed above 30 (illegally) because of the appeals process. Once children hit Year 3, this legal requirement is removed. Hence classes of 32 in my dc's school from years 3-6.

hooochycoo Fri 28-Mar-14 20:18:51

Closer to fifteen last year apparently.

What's an ideal number?
