AIBU?

To feel a little sick at the thought of this Facebook group...

It's called "women who eat on tubes" and is entirely made up of pictures of women, taken without their knowledge, eating in the tube.

I know it's not illegal or anything but it's a bit of a nightmare for me. Like many women I carry around a few food issues and have never been keen on people watching me eat. Still I've had to eat on the tube a few times...rushing from work to child pick up or at the end of a long day with the kids when it's my first sit down for hours...Those kind of situations. I would never whip out a full Indian takeaway on the Jubilee Line but on this group anything is fair game. A bag of raisins in your handbag will get you posted up there alongside the "secret sandwich scoffers".

AIBU to panic at the thought of this? I haven't spotted myself on there but I'm so paranoid that I will...

report it to FB?

Sorry but yabu...no one has to eat on the tube.

I've just had a look and it's sad that other women are actually joining in and posting photos - talk about solidarity.

I doubt facebook will take it down even if you report.

It's unpleasant, childish and misogynistic (men eat on the tube, too FFS) but it's not illegal and there is no justification for banning i.

Ugh, how horrid. What's particularly distasteful is that they're targeting women, rather than a generic 'people who eat on tubes'. Sexist pricks. Anyone who sees herself on there will feel mortified, thus playing right into their hands.

Why would people do that? Take pics of women eating on a tube train? How bizarre! Just don't look at it, it sounds bloody mad. Who cares if you had something to eat on the tube?

They're actually quite into it aren't they Confused

There's a posting format, they've done pie charts of sightings.. they had a 2 year 'party'. Wow.

YANBU - it should be re-named "people who eat on tubes". It's really skanky to eat in public and that's the bottom line I'm afraid.

Yes I've seen it and I think it's a gross infringement of people's privacy. Disturbing that it's deemed ok to take pics of anyone, any old time, and post them any old place for the whole world to laugh at.

I've actually just read one where they've given people a bollocking for making derogatory comments about people they've posted. Hmmm..

'Skanky to eat in public'? Since when? Confused

It seems a really odd idea for a FB group. Are they trying to say that it's embarrassing/shameful for a woman to eat on the tube, or funny or something? Are the people all overweight and it is "fat shaming" or something?

why just women

  1. We are not judgemental. We cherish and embrace. If you want to open a group called Men Who Eat On Tubes, please feel free, but we just do not have the time to run 2 groups like this.

  1. Hi Sarah, it's women because it is. There's no agenda behind it. It's just how the idea expressed itself

  1. Don't generalise Keith Moth. Your comment may come across quite offensive to some of our female members.

I'm pretty sure reporting it would be futile...It's not illegal or technically offensive, it's just weird. I spotted an ex colleague of dh's on there, entirely coincidentally, which makes me wonder if there are any other R L connections on there.

I know no one needs to eat on the tube but I get snappy when I'm hungry and if we're on the way home from a long day out I'd rather have a biscuit than snap at the kids. I can't eat while pushing the buggy and holding ds' hand so the tube is often the only time I have my hands free. But I don't think I'll do it again Sad

Is it meant to be "wrong" in some way to eat/eat on the tube? I'm genuinely bemused at why their are people who are interested enough to take photos of women and share them in this way. It's rude but it's also completely weird.

The thing is the more I read the more I think it isn't about fat or women shaming. I think it's actually a 'movement'.

Anyone making sexist or derogatory comments gets told off.

It seems to be more of a celebration of women eating on tubes Confused

very confusing either way, and an invasion of privacy.

tulipsaredelicious aka skank face - this horrid habit started, I guess, 30 or 40 years ago. Before that people had too much pride in themselves to be seen eating in public. It's common to eat in public.

Report
Supercosy · 26/03/2014 23:15

Oh, a sort of "arty celebration" of it or something like that? Blimey. That's different.

Report
katese11 · 26/03/2014 23:15

You're right nursey...But even if it's not intentionally fat shaming I'm sure I'm not the only person who would feel ashamed if I appeared there?

katese you're not alone at all I'd be mortified! Then I'd probably laugh a bit knowing there's no meanness in what they're saying..
