AIBU?

To think pretending to be pregnant on Facebook isn't funny?

Today one of my friends posted this status on Facebook:
"Guess it was too good to be true... im pregnant!"

People were getting excited and emotional and congratulating her. Someone asked how far along she was and she said 8 weeks. I was a bit concerned because it didn't sound like she was thrilled about it and I know she's been having a difficult time recently so it wouldn't be the best timing but I put congratulations because I wanted to be supportive and she sent me this message:

"sorry u should not have liked or commented on my status so now its ur turn Now you have to pick one of the 14 below and post to your status. This is the 2014 breast cancer awareness game. Don't be a spoil sport choose you poison, and change your status xxx 1) Damn diarrhea 2) Just used my boobs to get out of a speeding ticket 3) Anyone have a tampon, I'm out 4) How do you get rid of foot fungus 5) Why is nobody around when I'm horny? 6) No toilet paper goodbye socks! Post with no explanations. 7)Someone offered me a job as a prostitute but I'm hesitant. 8)I think I'm in love with someone what should I do? 9)I've decided 2 stop wearing underwear. 10)I still love my ex. 11)I really don't know how 2 tell anyone and I'm sick of hiding it I'm gay. 12)Guess it was 2 good 2 b true I'm pregnant. 13)Just won $7000 on a scratchy. 14)I've just found out I've been cheated on for the past 5 months.Post with no explanations."

Some of those statuses are just stupid but some of them, like saying you are pregnant or have been cheated on could tug on people's heartstrings. I was concerned so I can't imagine how her close friends and family felt! I think pregnancy is a life changing event and not something to joke about.

AIBU to think this isn't funny (and doesn't raise cancer awareness) and am I being a spoilsport not to take part?

It's ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

Urgh, I hate those silly statuses.

I inadvertently clicked 'like' on someone's status a few weeks ago and got a PM from that person giving me a variety of silly statuses that I should change mine to. I ignored it.

I have seen a few of these...I tend to just ignore them they always seem to offend someone or another.

Oh that explains my cousins ridiculous post about boobs and a speeding ticket. I didn't comment/ like because I thought it was so silly.

Pretending to be pregnant , even for a good cause, is not a good idea for many reasons .

It's nothing to do with cancer awareness. Tell your friend she is a fucking idiot.

I also think that many of these people 'raising awareness ' don't give a second thought about why they're doing it, they're just joining in because they think it's funny.

I saw this exact status today and was just a bit confused as she's 56 and had a hysterectomy about ten years ago. Thankfully I ignored it.

I got a similar one a few weeks ago, but they were all inoffensive like 'I've a spare one direction ticket, anyone wanna come?' It didn't claim to be for cancer or anything though. Just a bit stupid.

But yes, pretending to be pregnant is crass and thoughtless.

Or because they don't want to be seen as a "spoilsport" or seem like they don't care about cancer. Another one of my friends has just posted the "I've decided 2 stop wearing underwear." status. This trend has made me realise what sheep some of them are!

Oh, God, cancer is annoying enough without people doing stuff like this to promote it. Does it actually raise money to go towards research or something? Confused

No, it raises "awareness". Allegedly. I don't understand how when most people don't realise what it's about and you're not supposed to tell them unless they comment on or like your status.

Sounds confusing to me, but then I don't have a FB account.

I am getting sick of hearing about people taking their clothes off and generally being fatuous about these 'awareness' activities.

Everyone seems to be acting like eight year olds these days. I must be getting really old Grin

All this narcicissm and attention-seeking is going too far.

Meanwhile, people elsewhere in the world are using their free time for physical training and perfecting terror techniques, others are upping their productions of munitions, others are forcibly taking conquered populations, cowed by violence, back to the Middle Ages, winding back human rights reforms, blowing up Christians and chucking little girls out of school...

And our self-obsessed, empty-headed populace are taking selfies and thoughtlessly spouting lies on Facebook out of boredom. Because, like, there's nothing else they could possibly be better directing their energies towards.

I've seen two of these listed just lastnight and thought a bit odd. I'm surprised at one of the people. It's just stupid imo

Maltese it sounds like you are suggesting we all start oppressing local girls with terror techniques! Not quite sure what you are getting at!

op yanbu - it is ridiculous.

YANBU. It also explains someone's status recently about a speeding ticket. I didn't even think - she doesn't drive I just thought it was weird. So, no awareness raised about any issue whatsoever Confused

Hate this stupid statuses. If you want to raise awareness for breast cancer then donate and share the link/thankyou text message and encourage them to do the same. Very insensitive for the pg one. I have 2 on my friends list who are currently going through ivf and wouldnt even dream of faking it. Game or not.

I've just seen this, and I did wonder about it - but thanks for posting OP. I will now copy and paste the whole lot - & will no doubt be castigated (word of the day!) for being a miserable old grump

Ugh -yes, v annoying. The most annoying thing is that the two women who've done these statuses recently are normally intelligent and reasonable people.

Two women that I know, that should've read.
