AIBU?

To think if you can afford to do this then you are NOT skint or at least don't understand the meaning of the word?

My friend's ex is always moaning about how 'skint' she is, so much so that she can't afford to pay him back money she borrowed from him.

She recently discovered that one of her 'female' rabbits was actually make so bought a separate hutch etc off a friend so they could be separated. Fair enough, but then last week she spend over £200 getting both of them 'done'. 2 days later she spent another couple hundred on camping equipment? Then at the end of the week she booked a £1300 holiday!

Now I know that there will be those that say what is it to do with you (fair point) but AIBU to think that you cannot moan about being poor when you spend several hundred pounds in one week on really non essential stuff?

Poor is not having enough money to feed your children or pay for electric so you can have heating! AIBU or just bitter & jealous :(

YANBU.

In my mind, skirt is having nothing left after essentials. It is the understanding of the word essentials which is different to everyone. I mean food, bills and running a car. Others would think running a car is an extravagance. Others think a football season ticket is an essential. But to not pay so,done back and then go on holiday is BU.

YANBU. However she may pay for things on credit as not many people who are not well off have that kind of disposable income to hand.

IKWYM - my husband was recently owed money by a friend (he hadn't lent it to them!) and he was 'too skint' to pay it back, but not too skint to be on Facebook engaging in a range of activities, the costs of which could have gone towards paying what he owed. It was frustrating as we didn't begrudge him having a good time, but he seemed to think that we should just wait for the money as he had more important things to spend it on than his debt. If he had asked us for a loan, we would probably have said yes, but he didn't and that made it even more galling!

She obviously just doesn't want to pay him back the money

Thing is, she has a history of being terrible with money and has already had 20,000+ of debt written off because she couldnt afford to pay it back - now she seems to be starting the whole cycle off again! Plus she berated df for not buying a more expensive wedding present for his sister just because she spent £200 on her present (which she couldn't really afford).

I'm skint, as in the real meaning of skint, I can't afford to buy nice things or go on holiday, just barely managed to use my carers allowance to buy my son birthday presents so attitudes like hers make me cross :/

Sounds as if she is actually skint, but she is also appalling with money. She can't afford to do any of it, actually. But she does it anyway, and then she gets into terrible shit with debt.

Be grateful you are not as clueless as she is, and when she spends like a fool, feel sorry for her, because she will never have peace of mind until she learns to live within her means.

Really, being crap with money is nothing to be jealous of.

Admittedly it's only a small aspect of your post, but neutering your pets is pretty damn essential IMO.

She is BU not to pay her debts though.

its all relative, my idea of skint can be quite different to that of some of my friends.

Some people think they are 'skint' if they cannot afford two exotic holidays a year whereas others would be lucky to manage one.

Sounds like your friend's ex has written off the money she owes him though.

The problem you are referring to isn't about skint or not, it's about someone shirking their responsibilities over paying money they owe.

Someone who withholds money they owe to someone else when they could afford it is just selfish and cheating scum.

Someone who says they are skint and then spends money on something that could be considered a luxury and is still able to pay their bills and feed their family is just telling you how they feel. Skint is relative and subjective.

He should stop 'loaning' her money.

I think he has now expat :)

Aliana, admittedly that is important but if she was skint it could have waited! She had 2 hutches so no risk of pregnancies, or she could have just neutered one of them and problem solved!
