Aargh being a bit stupid.. You're right, overall capacity is over.. I suppose I was thinking it was 1cm over one way and 3 cm another but 5cm less another then the capacity might be less.. Should maybe have tried actually working it out

Great.. So they won't accept a normal sized cabin case.. Knew I shouldn't have booked with them.. They've just changed my flight times too so I've lost a whole evening of my trip.

There will be a box you have to fit it into at the gate.

They will charge you for putting it in the hold (probably plus an admin fee for their trouble). Maybe this will delay the flight (will they charge you for that too?)

Unless, of course it is a soft, squashy bag that you can underfill and thus be able to cram into the box.

I just paid more than our own seats for the privilege of a 20kg checked bag each. DH said we should have just booked a seat for our cases. I'd vote with my feet but impossible as they're the only carrier from our local airport to most destinations. The bastards.

I agree vivipru they are utter bastards.. The cost of buying more luggage and the loss of a whole evening of a week long holiday just made me wish I'd paid the extra to go with someone else..

They've just changed their no handbag policy though. You used to have to shove it in the case but they now let you carry it on your person.

There is a reason behind the case sizes though. It's to ensure the case will fit under the seat in front or in the overhead lockers. At least with RyanAir's (old) 1 bag policy (and that meant fitting your duty free etc into it) there was always space for your bags on board!

Top tip: buy a migration bag. You know those really light fairly flimsy things? They weigh nothing and you can squish them into the box at the airport. Only drawback is no wheels, so you'll have to carry it. They usually cost about two quid.

And their sizes are smaller than other airlines, so people think that they are ok and then get stung for 40 quid at the airport.

They are really clear on the rules when you book. They are cheap because they rely on people following the rules. They are not bastards. I have flown Ryanair many, many times and never had one single problem. You get what you pay for.

Ok so I have googled, and apparently it's only me that calls them migration bags. Other places call them shopping bags and or laundry bags or laundry bags. Like this only smaller.

Yes it's a metal box you have to fit your case in. Although since they've relaxed the 1 bag rule I've not seen them use it (I fly Ryanair at least once a week).

I agree you need to stick to the rules, and you do get exactly what you pay for (I think of it like catching a bus).

Portofino - I did expect their bag sizes would be on a par with other airlines albeit they would enforce their policy very strictly.. My hand luggage was advertised as being within the sizes most airlines allow and I have a BA flight and a United Airlines flight later in the year and it's fine on those.. Ok we should check but I feel they've deliberately set the size to catch people out..

And they're also bastards for losing me the first evening in Florence and causing me hassle changing hire car, check in details etc.. We were meant to land a 5pm, now it's 11.30pm, over an hours drive to the hotel once we pick car up and next to no sleep as we're going to the MotoGP the next day and we'll need to be up and away at the crack of dawn..
