To think that The Queen has no sense of taste

Most of this thread serves me right. But still....

I bought a box of The Queen's favourite chocolates, Prestat, just because it has a royal warrant and I wanted a taste of how the Royals live And they were on special offer The box was pretty but when we tried them.. MEH! they were just like a box of Milk Tray. They even had Turkish Delight bleah

The descriptions were hilarious and reminded me of the Monty Python chocolate sketch "crunchy frog lovingly enrobed in lark's vomit" -

Am I going to get sued for this? But honestly, it was just an ordinary box of chocolates so why does Queenie think they're so great when Hotel Chocolat sells MUCH nicer chocolates (at 3 x the priced).

Is this thread too middle-class? If it helps, I had a Freddo the other day and it was DEE LISH US.

a) She is an Old Dear so Milk Tray is probably just the sort of chocs she likes
b) She likes Liebfraumilch & jam sandwiches

Ergo did you really expect her to be an arbiter of gourmet taste ?

I love freddo's - and chomps. hth!

charmschool Tue 11-Mar-14 23:34:13

Well, with all that money, you think she'd eat something nice, don't you?

AuntieStella Tue 11-Mar-14 23:34:44

Do you expect you'll like ginned up Dubonnet? If so, you'll get used to the choccies - isn't there a gin flavoured one in that range?

I think her black shoes and bag with peach dress combo is an insight into her lack of taste.

I've been in the Riyal box at Cheltenham race course. It's just like my Nan's sitting room.

plutarch14 Tue 11-Mar-14 23:36:06

She also loves Tesco jelly babies, appaz.

Our royal fam are so bourgeois compared to, e.g., the Bourbons. Just look at Sandringham.

pixwix Tue 11-Mar-14 23:36:55

But on balance, chomps are the best.

charmschool Tue 11-Mar-14 23:38:03

Plutarch I would love to look at Sandringham, but sadly I've never been invited in.

AuntieStella - Hotel Choc do gin truffles. They are GORG!

charmschool Tue 11-Mar-14 23:39:29

pixwix chomps pull my fillings out. Sad but true.

I got some Prestat chocs given to me. The price tag was still on the box - £28 shock They were VILE.

I'm not a complete chocolate hethan - love a bit of Green and Blacks Maya Gold - but I swear a Freddo would have been sooo much nicer. Poor Queenie - bet she's never even had the pleasure of. Freddo.

Or a chocolate 'tool' (shows age)

Or even a box of 'Weekend'. Apart from the jelly one (shows age again) grin

I rather like Turkish Delight.

But I also like sewing, Foyle's War and those Scottish woollen blankets. I am an old young person.

Caitlin17 Tue 11-Mar-14 23:43:47

Prestat chocolate is much nicer than Hotel chocolat which I find a bit downmarket and cloying. Prestat lovely Earl Grey flavoured chocolate thins.

The best chocolate in the world is from Puccini Bomboni in Amsterdam. They don't export unfortunately. I come back with loads every time in there.

AuntieStella Tue 11-Mar-14 23:44:14

Here they are- Prestat London Gin truffles - remember them for the next "What can I give my eccentric octogenarian great aunt?" thread

OOAOML Tue 11-Mar-14 23:46:18

I got chocolate with absinthe in on the way back from Prague, it was luuuuvvvvvverrrly

ilovesooty Tue 11-Mar-14 23:49:11

Just because she's wealthy it doesn't mean she has to have good taste.

And what's wrong with Turkish delight?

hiddenhome Wed 12-Mar-14 00:00:15

She needs to get herself down to Aldi smile

charmschool Wed 12-Mar-14 00:02:16

Actually, I love Turkish Delight. But they gave it a flouncy name and when I bit into it I said "fuck me, it's Turkish delight."

Then it said "Brazil Nuts. From Brazil "where the nuts come from".." I mean, are they taking the piss?

Fortunately it wasn't £28 as it was on special offer. But never again.

My daughter eats marmite and nutella sandwiches so the lack of Escoffier taste is not limited to the royal family either.

AuntieStella Wed 12-Mar-14 00:04:37

Not piss taking - it's a literary allusion: "Brazil.. where the nuts come from" is a quotation from the play "Charlie's Aunt"

Caitlin17 Wed 12-Mar-14 00:05:46

"Charmschool* the bit about Brazil nuts is a quote. I think it's from a play called Charlie's Aunt.

Caitlin17 Wed 12-Mar-14 00:07:02

AuntieStella you beat me to it! I remember it being very funny.

LCHammer Wed 12-Mar-14 00:08:02

Unanimous YABU. She has no taste. Not even enough to pay for people to make good choices for her.
