AIBU?

To think that the people in London who are wearing thick coats, scarf and gloves are mental today?

The bridges over the Thames will be chilly. Be sensible, it's march still not summer!

So glad I'm here and not where my friend is. She's in Siberia where they are having a "heatwave". Er, it's -9 as opposed to -39! Sweltering! Grin

I refuse to be sensible. The sun has gone to my head!

Yanbu, I wondered why people were wearing winter coats and scarves too!

It's 19C in London, pretty warm.

YABU to use the term mental in this context, imo.

What is PO?

Report
ilovesooty · 09/03/2014 12:49

PO seems to be a term used by people who want to justify the use of discriminatory language.

The use of the word mental in this context is offensive in my opinion.

I agree with sooty.

Report
mrsjay · 09/03/2014 12:53

it means professionally offended , a bad choice of word I do agree, but I don't think the op meant any harm

Report
ilovesooty · 09/03/2014 12:54

I'm sure she didn't but she was thoughtless in using the term.

I'm in London, I wore a coat and scarf to walk the dogs this morning so YABU, it was chilly.

If they're still wearing coats at this time, I suspect, as it is London, they might be like my DH, and be from abroad and think that anything under 25C is freezing.

Oh boy. ilovesooty please suggest alternatives

OP YANBU though it's probably still a bit chilly in the shade. I'll be taking my coat out today as I'll be returning at night...

I think we have a long way to go to raise awareness of language as it relates to mental health.

Words like imbecile, cretin, moron and idiot (and so many others) do circulate endlessly outside of their original contexts but it shouldn't be impossible to think of other terms which aren't tainted in some way.

After all, language should be imaginative and should also evolve.

But to give another answer to the OP, some people just feel the cold more. Smile

Okay, thanks mrsjay. It's a variation on PC then? Meant to short-circuit and debate about language and power and minority rights and all that.

I think people wrapped up are less odd than the woman I have just seen.
She was wearing sandals, shorts and a little vest top - it is sunny here but only 11 degrees!!

I have seen a few people wearing shorts and t-shirts today.

I was about to say the same as Mama Pain. I'm in a very hot country right now (high 40s common in summer). The first year I was here I was astounded to see children bundled up in big coats and balaclavas when it got down to 25. This year, I resorted to wearing a coat...

I went to London yesterday, it was cold when I went to the station, hot around lunchtime, then cold on my way home.
