To ask what I should do about light?

The council is replacing all the street lights where I live. They have only done one so far, which has been moved from the road to the end of my (small) driveway. The light is different to the previous one and looks like the type the ones they have at sports stadiums. It is so bright that at 9pm now with all my house lights switched off, my rooms are as bright as they would be if it was early afternoon :/
Yesterday was my first night with this light and it was really hard to sleep. It's not that I'm particularly sensitive to light or that I want total darkness - the previous light used to come into my room too, but it was bearable. I have emailed the council but they have a habit of just ignoring emails. Am thinking of investing in sons new blinds - just annoyed that I will out of pocket over the nuisance of it all!!

Email your councillor, not just the council. My councillor got one moved from outside my bedroom window to the other side of the road. Top job! But it's still like a floodlight from over there...

I know it's not ideal but if you have curtains then you could see blackout lining into them which will help - the only downside is that they can make the room warm in summer.

I wouldn't think the council will do anything, it's actually a positive to have more efficient street lighting.

I'd park my car underneath it for added security and invest in blackout blinds.

Find your own ward councillor and complain direct to her or him.

And you could also try to get a Daily Mail Sadface story in the local paper.

We have just had these lights put in our village on the main road and they are incredibly bright! The old ones were an orange glow but these make it like daytime.

I'm not sure what you can do about it though. We have one outside our bedroom window still with the old bulb but I'm not sure they would move an entire lamppost for me. Aside from the expense, the only other space in other people's bedroom windows!

Suggest to your council they turn the lights off between midnight and 5am to save money Grin. They're trialling it here on more minor roads

Overly bright street lighting really annoys me. I get that street lighting improves road safely and decreases crime - but it also fucks up sleep patterns and means that huge areas of the country only ever see about 30 of the 3000 stars that should be visible on a clear night.

Thank you. I don't know what they're called. We did get letters through saying these new lights would be less bright than the previous ones. Def isn't the case! I think I put the letter in recycling bin :/ Will write to councillor. Am also hoping that as they change the others in the street more people will complain!!

The street lights in our town are being replaced this year. Our street was done months ago and yes I agree, they are a lot brighter! Upside is you feel safer walking home after dark as the light is more clearer and less dull orange. We have now got used to them, or they have dulled. However our council did offer and have fitted "shades" to those who complained the new lights were affecting them. Worth writing to Council I'd say.

I had kind of the same issue with a light outside. Our newly added light was part of a plan to light up areas for security which is fab.I contacted the council and they said they would look into it but they could only move it a metre or so (which would place it in front of my gate...) due to where it is suitable to fit them. They did however say they could put a kind of cover hood around the light to stop it blaring at the house so much.I did appreciate the security aspect however because if anyone was to get near my home theyd be seen, they cant hide!It is a bit annoying forking out but blackout stuff does work well.

Complaining worked!! They've put something behind the light and it's made such a difference :)
