AIBU?

To not understand why cafes serve food with the napkin underneath!

A plate of sandwiches arrives which are sat on top of napkin. Half of the sandwich filling has spilled out onto the napkin rendering it totally useless for the intended purpose of covering your lap or wiping your mouth. And worse - the napkin has started to break up and mix with the food on the plate.

WHY!

I was wondering this the other day as I tried to pick bits of napkin off my melted cheese toastie Hmm

It makes no sense to me at all.

At least it was on a plate and not a bit of tile, or wooden chop board :p

I have often wondered to.

This annoys me too.

It is so pointless. Starbucks I'm looking at you.

I agree so annoying! I have to ask for an extra napkin when it's my favourite sausage sandwich as I need it to wipe my hands. Stupid!!

Perhaps they think it makes the plate look more "classy"?

They are wrong.

YANBU!!!!

It's not just me! I can't stand it. Why why why. Surely the plate has to be cleaner.

YANBU

I always ask for another napkin.

Report
LaurieFairyCake · 05/03/2014 19:26

I know why

It's so the food doesn't slip off the plate - napkin provides extra grip

Yes it's stupid and annoying

Does that suggest a gap in the market for none slip plates/coverings.

what laurie says.

still stupid and annoying though!

YANBU at all - The sandwich shop I by my lunch from on work days puts the napkin round the baguette before putting it in the bag! Total waste of a napkin as it's covered in salad dressing etc when I tear open the bag and I could really do with the napkin to actually use!

YANBU. It is surely a huge waste of napkins. And I bet some food slides around anyway.

YANBU. There's a reason plates are made out of ceramics and not tissue paper!

I agree. This is really annoying - YANBU.

As someone else said, at least the food wasn't directly on a wooden board.

I recently had a burger and chips in a pub (classy, me Wink).
It arrived served on a wooden board. Surely that's not the most hygienic of 'plates' - wood absorbs liquids (from food or washing up water), can't be put in a dishwasher, harbours bacteria and nasties etc.

Not to mention the fact that I'm veggie so the thought of someones burger having previously leaked meat juices all over the board isn't the most appetising thought

Yes!

And do not get me started on little buckets with chips in!

Oh dear, I quite like them. If it's a sandwich I wrap it around the sandwich so I can pick it up without touching the food. Is that not what it's for? Hmm

Pies in pots are daft as well. Always far too hot (microwaved probably). Just put the pie on the plate so I can actually get to it! Grin
