To think that vanity sizing is getting a bit ridiculous

I am in the process of losing weight (coming up to 40kg loss, about 5/6 to go).

So I have obviously had to buy new clothes.

The size 10's are now hanging off me.

I have never, ever been a size 8. Size 8 to me is quite tiny. I was slimmer than I am now 10 years ago and was a size 12, barely fitting into a 10.

Even though I am relatively slim now I am still wobbly in places and have a muffin top. I didn't 10 years ago. So it would stand to reason that I should be a 12 now

Oh and this is NOT meant to be a stealth boast of any kind. I just think that sizing in clothes now is erm...a little skewed?

Maybe I have a skewed perception of myself? But I have pictures of me 10 years ago (during an ed I should add) and I was definitely slimmer then than I am now.

Are you shopping in different places now to ten years ago? I find sizes vary dramatically shop to shop!

I am in a different country now.

But even the size 12 jacket I bought online from TopShop just last year is now too big on the arms.

And the size 12 dresses I bought from DP online at the same timeare now a tad unwearable.

Sizes have always varied hugely shop to shop (or they have in the 20 years I've been buying clothes). I don't think it's anything to worry about to be honest.

I disagree about vanity sizing to a certain extent,I had a big clear out recently and discovered some old marks and Spencers t shirts, their 16 is huge compared to today's size 16.

Anyway, does it matter? Clothes have always been different sizes according to the shop. As long as it fits and looks good, who cares?

YANBU. Measurements for clothes are a lot bigger than they used to be and clothes now are a lot bigger than their measurements imply!

I don't do a lot of clothes-buying, but it's the inconsistencies that bother me. Not just between shops (though that does need sorting out) but between styles within shops.

Trying on trousers in next? I need to pick up every different style in a 6, 8 and 10 in regular and long length. One 10 reg will fit well, but another style has to be an 8 long. It's infuriating. And the assistant goes "how many items?" And you look and go, "er, 9?" Ridiculous.

I want to be able to think: I'm a size X (whatever) therefore I shall pick up a size X and instead of trying twelve versions on I'll take this one home and it will fit. Job done. But no...

Never, ever did I think I would ever have to buy a size 8. I just don't think I have the build for it. 10/12 sure. But 8?

I recently bought some clothes online, and even though I measured myself beforehand to make sure I got the 'correct' size, there is definitely room in them.

Shops vary massively, it drives me mad, even in the same shop you can't always guarantee the sizes will be consistent

YANBU. I had to return jeans to ASOS that were a size 4 as they were hanging off me. Ridiculous.

Most of my clothes are bought online from alternative stores (so UK and USA sizing)

Yanbu to think this. I totally agree. There's a fb selling page for dresses and lots of girls post pubs of themselves wearing these dresses with caption 'size 6-8' when they look like they're smuggling porridge inside said dress.

Yabu to mention it because now lots of 'size 16's' may feel a little bit shit.

The point being is that I know that I am bigger than I was 10 years ago (flat stomach, slim arms, no wobbly bits, pre-kids) and I remember being a size 12 then.

How on earth can I be potentially 2 sizes smaller now? The mind boggles.

Even the shorts I wore back then (size 32in, baggy) fit me. I had some new ones in that size stashed away for when I lost weight. Tried them on and they promptly fell down.

Shops vary, next is the worse. Im a size 8 there when really im a 12. Primark is all over the place and so can Jane Norman be. It's frustrating especially if you.order online.

I agree OP. I used to buy size 10 or 12 Next jeans .. usually the 10 was so skin tight that I had to lay out on the bed to even close them still bought em tho! because the 12 was a little loose around the waist but perfect elsewhere. Now, having a small amount of extra poundage, I know I wouldn't fit those 10s without damaging internal organs, yet when I try a 10 on in Next, it's basically a bit baggy....an odd shape is probably a better word.

Not all shops do vanity sizing though...

Theres no harmonization in size which would be better, same with lengths. There next is good because it has petites and accurate lengths but other stores short lookso long on me and some stores longs fit great!

I have been the same body size for all adult life. Same height/ weight/ build ( bar pregnancy). I used to always gt a size 8 or small. Now small is actually 10-12 in most stores ( even says on label under 's', and half the time I have to try on xs or size 6 or leve store if they go no smaller.

How is this? If anything my shape might be slightly larger after two children, but always been 8stone give or take a pound or two.

My 4 year old is wearing 4 year old jeans, a 6 year old jumper and a 2 year old Tshirt! How does that work??
