To think I could have prevented DD's silent reflux & fussiness by taking vitamins?

My 9 month old DD had silent reflux and has recently been diagnosed with cows milk allergy.

She is generally very very fussy. She cried a lot when younger, only slept on my chest etc and wanted to be held a lot. Since the past 4 months, she wakes up every hour at night.

My dad who she's met a few times told me that she was 'weak' because I probably didn't eat well during pregnancy and take vitamins.

I did eat well (or thought I did) but I couldn't take vitamins as it affected by digestive system, and I couldn't tolerate them. Midwives were aware and didn't seem concerned.

Had I taken the vitamins would my DD have been a happier baby? Hmm

Is your Dad a doctor?

If not, I'm not sure why you're even considering his opinion

bollocks. The man clearly sat through school flicking his hair and should be ashamed of his scientific ignorance. What a fool.

ignore. Too stupid to bother with.

He's a rude, insensitive numpty, who doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.

For the record, DD2 has silent reflux, and had colic. I DID take vitamins, and ate very heathily, so they certainly didn't prevent it for us.

Well I DID take vitamins and DD has silent reflux, is fussy and wants to be held all time. So no I really don't think it has anything to do with that. Just ignore him!

I followed all advice on what to eat, drank not a drop of alcohol, made sure I got my 5+ a day, took pre natal vitamins and still had a refluxy nightmare sleeper of a baby (gorgeous though he was/is). Your dad is talking rubbish!

I didn't take any vitamin supplements and had no problems. His comments are deeply unhelpful. She isn't "weak" anyway. What an unpleasant comment for you to have to deal with.

Perhaps your grandmother should have taken some vitamins. Might have stopped your dad being a twit.

If only it were that simple.

He is BVVU. Ignore him and his ridiculous opinions.

Vitamins don't make you grow a sphincter. He's talking bollocks.

Children are good enough at making you feel guilty with adults joining in. Please ignore him.

I took every vitamin going plus some extra ones recommended as I was having twins and DT1 has silent reflux. This is absolutely not your fault.

Bollocks. DS had silent reflux and tends to be fussy and unsettled, I took loads of vitamins when I was pregnant. It's the luck of the draw! I don't know why people play the blame game like this.

Well isn't he a treat? I took vitamins and ate properly and everything. One dc with full reflux and one with silent reflux, neither slept. And hence why I stopped at two Grin.

I took vitamins and are super healthy while pregnant.

My DD still had reflux, colic and was super fussy (still need to be held while napping and cosleeps at night at 17mo)

I really don't think it would have made much difference. Reflux is just an immature valve in the stomach so they grow out of it.

Where do people come up with this shit?

I was told that I had caused DS's milk allergy by breast feeding him and therefore exposing him to cow's milk earlier than if he'd been fed formula!!!! Hmm

She didn't believe me that formula contained more cow's milk than my breast milk because it's made from erm cow's milk!

Ignore, ignore, ignore!!!!!!!

What on earth does he think your vitamin intake during pregnancy has to do with your daughter's reflux? He sounds like a twat, and if I were you I would tell him to keep his wanky opinions to himself!

By and large, the vitamins are for your benefit -- because the baby is (in a nice way) like a little parasite living off you, you can be left short. The main exception is folic acid, but that's relevant to preventing neural tube defects, which your DD doesn't have. There is no way that your not taking prenatal vitamins has contributed to your DD's fussiness, allergies or reflux.

However, it seems very likely that your father is contributing to your own general stress and unhappiness.

Buy him some vitamins and say that they might help him develop sensitivity and manners.

You've done nothing to cause the reflux or fussiness, OP. It's the luck of the draw. She'll grow out of it. It sounds like you're doing a good job of helping you both cope.

As Debbie says - my understanding is that your body puts the baby first so whatever nutrients they need they take.

It's more a case of you being left short of them if you don't take supplements :)

Yep same as lots of people here - took vitamins, ate healthy, no alcohol etc etc and ds2 has silent reflux. Only diagnosed at 8mths after months of pain and suffering for us all.
so i think this very scientific survey shows we are all right and your dad is wrong! So ner ner!
don't be made to feel guilty. You have made a beautiful baby and that is a miracle so enjoy that. There was nothing you could have done any differently

By the way my scientific study and childish comment was to show that the same amount of "science" has gone into his childish way of thinking. You may be better than me and rise above such childishness!
