About fridge hygiene?

DH unpacked the shopping tonight as I was in the middle of making dinner when it arrived. Afterwards I had to totally rearrange the fridge so that the raw meat was on the bottom shelf with the cooked meat on the shelf above and all the cheese together and jars together etc. I also had to remove the soy sauce from baking cupboard and put it where it belongs with the oils/condiments but that's beside the point. He never covers up open packets of bacon or ham etc with cling film either, just leaves them open in the fridge.

I don't know whether it was my mum or Brownies/Guides/Home Ec at school that drummed into me how you should and should not arrange a fridge but when I raise it DH looks at me like I'm mad and just says yes ok to humour me but clearly thinks I'm making it all up. I'm not am I? It is normal to organise your fridge like that isn't it?Blush

Yanbu, I do the same! I never leave things opened in the fridge. My DH knows me well enough now to pack the fridge properly. Grin

YANBU at all. You need to give him a quick lesson in fridge hygiene and why it's so important, especially re meat.

Fortunately this is only bit of tidiness DMIL seems to have taught DH.

He's very untidy, but food hygiene he gets.

You say you had to re-arrange the shelves so that it was right, but don't exactly say how your DH Had done it!
If it was you who had to put the raw meat on the bottom shelf and the cooked meat higher up, then that's correct.
Raw meat should always go on the bottom shelf! Basic food hygiene.
I'd always keep ham and meats covered in cling film too.

As long as everything is wrapped or covered or in plastic boxes then why does it matter if raw meat is above cooked meat?

Agree everything should be covered tho.

YANBU.

I never use the fridge at work because people leave food uncovered and out of date stuff gets left in there to go mouldy - makes me feel ill just to see it.
I've tried tidying it but people get annoyed when I throw away anything.

Raw meat has juices/blood that can drip, regardless of whether they're covered up or not.

Unfortunately this this a classic example of deliberately/subconsciously doing a crap job so that if in future he's tries to unpack the shopping you will either jump in and do it do he can the say you won't 'let him' or you later have to rearrange things which means he can then say there is no point in him doing it because its never good enough huff huff.

This is one if the many petty reasons why I can't bear the thought of getting the though of getting into a heterosexual relationship ever again!

Aaaaargh!

Most of us buy meat from the supermarket these days in plastic sealed plastic trays. The fridge "rules" date from a time when meat would come from the butcher's shop, wrapped in paper, and therefore might drip through the paper.

So? It's still basic hygiene to put raw meat on the bottom shelf. I'm far from old (or at least I like to think so Grin )
Certainly have always bought my meat from supermarkets in well wrapped trays!

I am so, so careful with cleaning my fridge.

I completely empty it and scrub it out at least once a fortnight...completely scrub it, with soapy water and Dettol, remove all the trays and plastic bits and scrub them in the sink. I arrange things as the op does, and nothing is ever left open.

The only reason I do, is because we had a new fridge about a year ago. I only ever used to give the old fridge a good wipe over every now and then. It looked clean.

When we got the new fridge, the old one got unplugged and left in the corner of the kitchen for two days (dh was taking it to a charity shop). When I opened it after two days, I was literally nearly sick. It was COVERED in green and grey mould. Particularly bad was the bottom shelf where meat was stored and the milk compartments (both of which seemed perfectly clean before) - they were disgusting, I've never seen anything like it.

Obviously it must have been full of bacteria that didn't develop when cold but came out when the temp warmed up.

It was enough to make me sick and certainly enough to make sure I scrub the fridge out with soapy water and Dettol regularly now.

Our meat does mostly come from the butchers wrapped in paper. And those supermarket packets do leak though, especially if they contain fish for some reason. You get seepage along the join sometimes yuck

Dunno about it being conscious/subconscious on his part to avoid being asked again. I didn't ask him this time. Based on the very dubious cleanliness/hygiene standards at IL's house (I give you: no soap in the bathroom for hand washing after going to the loo...) I suspect he's just never been taught and considers himself too long in the tooth to be lectured about such stuff by the nagging wife.

Agreed, you definitely get blood underneath the trays underneath the clingfilm holding it to the trays. Have seen it. Boak.
Should not be on a higher shelf, should be on the bottom one

The raw meat on bottom shelf dates back to when most fridges had wire racks instead of glass shelves (50's?). As they are now; it can't actually matter, nothing can seep through?

I'm not that fussy. Don't see how meat can drip through a solid shelf Confused

I do like everything in it's place though so it makes it was it to find and do a shopping list.

I used to be like that but I'm not as careful now. I wouldn't put raw meat on the shelf above cooked but I do put it on the same shelf.

My fridge is a disgrace Blush I am only home for, at most, 2 non sleeping hours a day and these things just never seem to get done.
