Cycling may be good for us but this country isn't yet set up to cater for large numbers cycling. Add to that that SOME cyclists appear to have a death wish and people aren't going to stop disliking cyclists any time soon

Well it's a great idea if you live somewhere flat like Lincolnshire but I wouldn't fancy cycling the Devon lanes.

Lincolnshire is not bloody flat! It's just the fens that are.

Cycling on hills is good for you, you'll have thighs of steel!

"And people should ditch their cyclist hating ways"

Wow that will help start a polite discussion.

I would love be able to cycle but due to an injury caused by a cyclist I am unable to.

I an 35.5 weeks pg and have no sense of balance. I really don't think cycling is good for me! Sorry!

Report
bottlenecker · 11/02/2014 17:13

Well BoneyBack some people seem to think cyclists have no place on the road. I am just challenging that mentality with the link in that cyclists actually save the country money.

But you start the thread with a dig at people straight away. Hardly a way to encourage a sensible debate on the issues to be fair!

That's the point non cyclists benefit from people who choose to cycle

I agree cycling is good for you however some cyclists behave like idiots on the road and can be dangerous (as can some drivers). I don't think people are intolerant of cyclists, just idiots.

PatriciaHolm · 11/02/2014 17:19

Sensible cycling with respect for others on the roads, pavements and cycle paths is to be encouraged.

Problem is not everyone cycles like that. Just as not everyone drives like that, unfortunately.

Mild

I disagree I think some people are intolerant of cyclists full stop. That is really my argument. Some people believe cyclist don't belong on the road because they hold them up or other such argument.
I am challenging this with my link which claims that if more people cycled we would save a fortune in NHS bills.

If more people walked you would save money. If less people drank you would save money etc etc.

The problem is SOME cyclists are idiots and you can't ignore that fact. If you want more people to cycle then you need to improve infrastructure for cycling and improve cyclist education so they have at least some awareness of basics such as stopping at traffic lights, not cycling down the side of a HGV etc etc

I'm disabled and couldn't get on a bike, so it would be no good for me!

expatinscotland · 11/02/2014 17:27

Gawd, I HATE cycling and it's very impractical and dangerous in a lot of locations.

Report
AgaPanthers · 11/02/2014 17:28

I hate drivers, they kill thousands per year and cause billions in damage. Why don't they learn basic awareness of not driving like cunts?

bearleftmonkeyright · 11/02/2014 17:36

Yanbu, there will be plenty to chunter about in Yorkshire in July for those who don't like it. But we produce world class cyclists, male and female and we are hosting part of the greatest cycle race in the world this year. More and more people will be inspired to get on a bike and get their kids cycling as well.

I'm a cyclist and I never click on these threads because of the ill-informed, cycling bashing that goes on. So I'll jump in early and say YANBU before I fuck off and not read this thread again for my own sanity!

I hate this cyclists are dangerous idiots argument, even if tempered into pretend reasonableness of 'some cyclists are idiots'. It is not some cyclists who are idiots but some PEOPLE. Some people are arses, and some of those arses drive cars, vans, buses, taxis, motorbikes, ride bicycles or walk. They continue their arsey ways whether in transportation or not.

Report
Sirzy · 11/02/2014 17:48

I don't think anyone has said different have they nosleep? But that doesn't change that fact that we need major changes in this country if we intend to make cycling more common.

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 11/02/2014 17:50

The cycling is good you say? I think the walking also.

The driving, there is too much of the driving no?

But in this weather the cycling is not much fun!

Report
Fakebook · 11/02/2014 17:52

That's a stupid bit of research. What if people started running? Or roller blading? Or scooting? That would save money too.

The govt has set aside millions to improve cycle paths. I will find a link when the witching hour is over.
