AIBU?

To think the p. pig writers are a bit sexist towards daddy pig?

My DH thinks so and I tend to think he's got a point on this one. Daddy is made out to be a buffoon who's crap at everything apart from bringing home the bacon (figuratively speaking) whilst mummy pig is oh so wise and clever

whilst this isn't too dissimilar from my own situation I do think that if the situation were reversed and MP was portrayed as an airhead or other stereotype, there would be uproar.

AIBU?

YANBU

Similar thing happens in many cartoons and sitcoms. It's starting to get on my tits.

Usual double standards.

But doesn't Daddy Pig do something complex with engineering as a job? So he is not an airhead or portrayed as one, but more one of those clever people often lacking in common sense....

(Addresses OP's point too seriously. Grin)

What do the other people in his office do, iLick? They do stamping and blue triangles from memory, but that doesn't seem very likely in terms of career. Grin

Ooo I love a pp thread sad! Daddy pig is a architect. He built the house for the wolf family. I agree with the above poster who thinks he is intelligent but lacks commen sense.

Daddy Pig is my lifestyle guru... his favourite room is the museum cafe #priorities

Yabu. He's a successful architect. I'm sure mummy pig makes silly mistakes too. Like when she can't put the toy box together. Or when she lets the kids mess up daddy pigs shirt.

They laugh at all the characters in Peppa Pig!
Mummy Pig falls in the blackberry bush, and other buffoon behaviour!

Yes, they laugh at everyone. It's presented as part of normal family life (which it is). I like it. I hate families where everyone's fucking nice to each other all the time. It's unnatural.

It's for children so children can't be the fall guys. Neither can women or old people. That just leaves middle aged men to be the dopey ones who get everything wrong.

The dad from cramptwins is another well known one in this situation!!
Powerpuff girls, other than the dad screwing up with chemical x, is extremely intelligent if a bit silly... I get you.

From a serious, sexual politics POV, the vat maggoty of decision makers in the media are men. That means that fundamentally men are choosing to be portrayed this way.

There is a deeply unhealthy family dynamic going on with Daddy Pig's in laws if you ask me. The incident where they get lost on the way to Windy Castle 'because Daddy Pig can't map read', and Mummy Pig phones her parents and they all laugh at him in front of the children. Can you imagine the MIL thread on here if the situations were reversed?

And the treehouse one where they mock his big tummy. Tut tut.

This bit of his argument is particularly salient, I think:

But when Freegard says, "The type of jokes aimed at dads would be banned if they were aimed at women, ethnic minorities or religious groups", she has got a point – just not the one she thinks she's got. Men and fathers are so favoured in our society, the world is weighted so much to their advantage, that comedy writers can safely make them the perpetual butt of jokes. The fact that Homer Simpson is the funniest, most prominent and most popular character in that show says far more about continued male dominance of money and power in the west than his fecklessness or misfortunes say about the undervaluing of paternal effort.

I saw that David Mitchell piece, JoinYourPlayfellows, and I think he's right. It's precisely because of continued male dominance, culturally speaking and otherwise, that they are the safe but of humour in cartoons.

(Mind you, the only Peppa Pig episodes I've seen don't actually differentiate between the Pig parents at all - they both jump in middy puddles, and Daddy Pig is the one to twig where George's missing toy is.)
