AIBU?

To be disappointed with friend for buying a dog as a Christmas present?

I'm so disappointed with my friend. She's bought her daughter a puppy for Christmas. Not only am I disappointed but extremely annoyed with her, I think she's being bloody selfish. I think at some point if she mentions the gift to me I am going to have to speak my mind.

The reason I feel as I do is that she has form for buying pets and then getting rid of them a few months later. Last year she got a kitten and within months she discarded it, locked it out of the house until it stopped hanging around trying to get back in. She didn't even have the decency to take the poor thing to a cats home.

She works full time practically so I have no idea how she expects to care for this puppy in the early days. She's always complaining she's skint and I wonder has she taken into account the costs of looking after a dog, not to mention the time commitment considering a dog's lifespan.

Arrghh, I just needed to vent, I really dislike people who have this attitude to animal welfare. This also makes me question my friendship with her if I'm honest.

Was this a surprise to you? Surely she spent the run up to Xmas talking about it....

Totally agree with you and moreso with her form for buying an animal and then dumping it. I would definitely question my friendship with someone like this.

No, due to work commitments I haven't seen or spoken to her for a month or so. I've just seen it on Facebook.

How horrible, that poor kitten. She shouldn't buy animals if she can't be bothered to look after them.

YANBU. yuck, I was going to say YABU because I think it can work fine to give pets as gifts if the Giver takes full responsibility, but that's not the case in OP. I'd be feeling sick, too. :(

I couldn't have remained in contact with her after the kitten incident.

That poor kitten Angry

Like Sooty, that would have spelt the end for me!

Yes. I would cut contact for the kitten incident, no question. And tell her why. And report to the RSPCA.

Yanbu. This kind of thing happens far to often. Pets are a commitment not a disposable toy. You can't just get bored and get rid :( Angry whata poor poor kitten.

This stuff annoys me more than anything else I think.

Rehoming due To extreme circumstances I can understand. Multiple pets/ditches I just can't. Grrrrr

Y are not bu in the slightest!!

Hopefully the kitten was one that was found by another Mumsnetters ( per The Litter Tray) and given a good and loving home...

YANBU people like this really do not deserve animals Sad If she can't be bothered to look after a cat she certainly will not look after a dog they are a hundred times harder work than cats. What type of dog is it?

How utterly vile.

I am lost for words to describe this person.

I can only hope that kitten is living a wonderful life with a lovely family.

I was chatting to a woman about my dog a few weeks ago and as the conversation continued it was clear she was similiar to your friend. Numerous puppies given away for the weakest of reasons. Perhaps a 6 months gap then another puppy for the children to adore and then dumped. My blood pressure was sky high and I felt so angry with her flippant attitude towards animals.

Angry Angry Angry

ugh, people like this annoy the hell out of me. I picked up my pup on saturday, he was a planned addition to our family, I'm a SAHM and can devote time to him and I know from year of ownership how much hard work they are.

Ive spent most of the last few days shivering in the garden chanting 'do a wee murphy', its repetitive and quite boring. Somehow cant see your friend doing that.

Puppies are adoreble, Murph is adorable, but I was under no illusion how much hard work and expense he'd be for the next 15 years.

I picked up a pure GSD pup from the road last night. We were tipped of because the 9 year old daughter had posted on Facebook that her parents were going to dump her on the way to the airport as they were leaving Qatar to go home to the UK. I spend my life mopping up designer puppy farmed accessories and sympathise. I would offer to help with its training so at least it will be socialised and rehomeable when the time comes. And make sure the local breeders and rescues know about her form.

An animal whatever form should be part of the family and there for, for life. Whether that be until they pass naturally or until the kindest thing is to put them to sleep. My mum got us a kitten as an early Christmas present. He was abandoned with 4 others in October 20years ago. Unfortunately we lost him 18 months ago to old age but he still lived with my mum until he passed. That's how pets should be

exactly stupid. we lost our scottie last year, not before a £3k Bill in the desperate hope to cure him. we then lost our westie last month from old age.
A dog has been a part of all our lives for so many years and our home didn't feel right without one, it was well thought out and budgeted before we even started looking.

it's so much more than a cute ball of fur with a bow on Christmas day.

I think this so sad to read, another irresponsible pet owner. I have a lovely rescue dog, a loyal loving Labrador. Her previous owner also got her for a Christmas present but soon got bored of the commitment that comes with having a dog. She was locked in the garden shed most of the time and almost starved. I find it shocking that any one can treat any animal like this. Please speak to her about your concerns. If she shows any signs of neglecting this dog. I would have no hesitation of dognapping her and taking her to the Dogs Trust, who will carefully re home her.

I'd give anything for a dog or cat so would dd1. The reasons we don't are because we know we can't give the right home.

When people do this it makes me even more angry because they have the one thing I want but can't have and they tear it like crap. :(

Yanbu op. How on earth could she ignore the meowing of her cat who would of been hungry thirsty cold etc until it stopped coming round Angry

I would never be able to speak so much as a civil word to her again - closing the door on an animal until they just 'wandered off' would be a deal breaker.

Your 'friend' is a fucking bitch and I would have no qualms telling her that in no uncertain terms... and then reporting her to the RSPCA in the hope she get prosecuted.

In fact, PM me her details and I'll be glad to report her on your behalf.

Your post has actually upset me. How can people do this?

Report
PumpkinPositive · 25/12/2013 17:38

I am no cat lover - to put it mildly - but your 'friend' is an oxygen thief. I would have had no qualms about reporting her at the time of the previous incident. People like her should be barred from keeping animals for life.
