AIBU?

to think shopping shouldn't be this difficult?

Pretty much every time I go shopping, I want something which I think is perfectly simple, commonplace and reasonable but which turns out to be a nightmare to try and find.

This time I wanted to buy some jogging pants/tracksuit bottoms which were a) petite and b) had a pocket in them. How difficult can it be? I even did some research online first to ascertain the likeliest shops.

Then, this evening I spent 3 hours traipsing around stores across a big city centre - high street clothes shops, sports clothing shops, department stores etc. Not a sausage.

So today's shopping bugbears:

  • So many shops only sell trousers in one leg length. I can't imagine a shop just selling one dress size because that's what the 'average' woman is so why can't they realise that some women are taller or shorter than average?

  • Why the dearth of (useful, practical) pockets on women's clothes? Are women expected to jog with a handbag? I particularly hate the trend for clothes with 'pocket detail' so you're briefly conned into thinking they have

a pocket but actually they've just gone to the effort of making it look like it's got a pocket without actually giving you a pocket.

Even M & S, which is usually good for having this kind of stuff, didn't come through - They were one of the few shops that had 'petite' jogging pants but not with pockets - Taller people were allowed pockets but only if they wore beige.

It isn't just clothes shopping I have this problem with - Shoe shopping is a pain if you are a half-size with slightly wider than average feet. It's not like I'm particularly unusually-built - I'm not two-foot tall with feet like a duck but I might as well be when I go shopping!

I've just given up and accepted the rag-bag look Grin

It's just so painful and exhausting, then I get back home and anything I've bought just tries on in a completely different way than in the shop! How does that happen??

I have a 34" inside leg, and they're a bit better at selling a longer leg now (it's not that much longer FFS) but you've got to traipse to find them, or go all the time and know what you're looking for (I don't), and everything's got 'stuff' on it.

Hate it, hate all the milling people, hot shops, bright lights, shelling out shed loads, and getting back to find I've really only bought what I've fucking got already!

Grin thanks for the rant.

'Why the dearth of (useful, practical) pockets on women's clothes?'

Because they've used all the fabric making actual, functional pockets on baby and toddler clothes. I am jealous of how many pairs of trousers with pockets my 16 month old has. What's he got to carry around? Car keys? His wallet? His phone? MP3 player? His own friggin nappies and wipes?

FFS.

He's got his Very Important sticky sweet Yank, that bit he found on the floor and took a liking to, and the tissue used to wipe his nose whose job it is to fill a whole washing load of little bits you can't get rid of.

I just cant do the traipsing around for hours shopping. Im the kind of person who goes into meltdown after even 1/2 hour in shopping centres anyway, I cant bear the packed shops. Wouldnt be found dead in Westfield, Lakeside, Bluewater. Never been, never want to. Online shopping is an absolute godsend for me. My teen DD is only 5ft tall I get a lot of her stuff from Asos Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, all of whom have petite clothing sections. Her sportswear I get from Pineapple..if thats not your kind of thing tho, there are lots of sportswear companies online and at least you can browse from the comfort of your chair (drink in hand Wine ) Smile

Can't you do it online. I just got some track suit bottoms with pockets for shortarses last week from next, delivered to my door. Probably while you were traipsing the land!

This is why so many shop on line. No car parking charges, no struggling to find somewhere to park, you can shop at midnight, you don't get frozen and then boiled as you go in and out of shops, your own (nice) loo is steps away and you don't get blisters on your hands carrying the heavy bags. And you can usually find what you are looking for.

Talking about pockets, I would love to have pockets in my trousers for my phone. I have even thought about taking some pairs to a tailor to have pockets put in.

Look at Sweaty Betty for jogging bottoms--they have special little phone sized pockets and (i think) offer different inside leg measurements.

OP have you looked in a proper sports or running shop for your joggers.

All my running trousers have a small zipped pocket that is presumably for keys or a small amount of money. Might cost a bit more than the high street, but the quality will be good and sometimes it is worth paying extra to find what you need without the hassle.

You're right though in that shopping is far too hard and stressful. My big bugbear is how fast my size sells out (12 or 14 and long if trouser). M&S are terrible for this - every size available except mine. Angry

A friend of mine the other day was wearing lovely trousers (not joggers) with huge pockets. She'd got them in the mens section. She barely tops 5' and is not bloke shaped (she's short and curvy). I think I'm going to try that route next.

Ladies' clothes don't have pockets because we can't be trusted not to ruin the line of our outfits. I don't think I've ever had a 'line' to ruin, and I'm sure as heck not a lady.

Def shop online, you can choose exactly what and free returns anyway

Last night dh and I between us have ordered all Xmas presents for both sides of family, order Xmas food and this week food, and booked a ski holiday. All whilst sitting at home eating cheese and drinking wine.

I hate shopping. Even more so now I'm hugely pregnant. Was forced into the shops today to get DS's feet measured for new shoes. Dear god what an ordeal that was - they didn't even have any in his size.
Then I stupidly thought I could placate distraught toddler (he hates getting feet measured/being touched by strangers in general) by taking him to the pet shop to look at fish as rabbits. The shop was full of people with their dogs. I really don't get why people think "I'm going to the pet shop, I'll take the dog". I wouldn't take the cat with me or take my toaster to currys, but the bloody place was rammed with them and they were all big and slobbering in DS's face which upset him no end, being only 2 and these dogs were way bigger than him.
So I had to cart him off back to the car and bribe with chocolate to calm him down. What a fecking disaster. I'm never setting foot in a shop again.

much as i would love to support my local shops whenever i go out to look for something I find I can rarely find it, this ranges from clothes to gadgets to bedding to curtains lighting etc etc. half an hour online and I have it so sadly I prefer to sit at home snug and warm, not dressed up, glass of wine, own loo drinks food etc on tap only teen tiny slight issue is that some things that look a bargain really aren't after a wine too many Smile and I am tempted by e-mai offers to overspend (£25 off if you spend £50, so half price then at body shop and free delivery... bargainous)

If its just for jogging in get yourself a belt which you can wear to stick things in much easier.

I agree on the petite thing though, my running pants are stupidly long on me as I can't find petite

I got some tracksuit bottoms in Primark. No pockets but they are fairly short length.
Jeans I have found to be good in New Look - they do standard sizes, but in different lengths.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I shop online for other things but have never considered buying clothes online as I like to try things on first. However, after yesterday's experience, I'm willing to give it a go!
