I was at work today, i work in a very nice shop, I approached a customer laying on a bed. He wasnt much older than me ( mid 30's) and had two early teens with him. I asked if he was ok and if he needed any help, to which he responded' im alright love, id be better if you jump on next to me' I laughed and said ' no' but he carried on telling me how much i wanted to and that his wife was in the loo and to be quick.
His children seemed to think it was funny, i felt awkward and embarrassed. I walked away feeling humiliated and laughed at.

Do i need to get a grip or am right that he was, in fact, a knobber.

Absolute knobber.

OTheHugeManatee Sun 17-Nov-13 17:50:58

He was a tosser and massively inappropriate. YANBU.

DameDeepRedBetty Sun 17-Nov-13 17:51:42

Definitely a knobber.

RevelsRoulette Sun 17-Nov-13 17:52:08

Yup. He was a prat.

Nice example he's setting for his kids too. How to talk to a woman you don't know from adam. hmm

But I am sure he thought he was rip roaringly funny and there was no conscious intention to humiliate you.

thebody Sun 17-Nov-13 17:52:51

Tryandguessthisonethen Sun 17-Nov-13 17:53:26

I'd have been tempted to say 'I'm sorry sir but that lewd sort of behaviour isn't tolerated and perhaps you'd like to try elsewhere?'

fanjofarrow Sun 17-Nov-13 17:54:36

He was a bellwhiff.

Untilthecowscomehome Sun 17-Nov-13 17:55:13

He was a knob.

Unfortunately there are many knobs about. I get them often in my shop, just recently I've had

"hurry up, mush, mush" as I was walking to the till hmm

"20 lambert and your phone number please" hmm

And while reaching down to stock a low shelf and realising a customer wanted serving behind me. As I apologised he said "don't worry I was enjoying the view"

As I say, many, many knobs.

When he suggested, "better be quick", it's a pity you couldn't have said, "you probably always are, unfortunately for your wife, sir".

VerySmallSqueak Sun 17-Nov-13 18:09:31

I have to say I have a hide like a rhino and I wouldn't be humiliated but I would have had to put him down in a non-getting the sack way.If I could think of think of something fast enough.

I'm sure he thought he was being very funny rather than showing the world just how inadequate he actually is.

leopardprintsock Sun 17-Nov-13 18:29:10

im not sure i could have said things like that, its a very ' naice' store and i was totally caught unawares, you just dont expect that sort of thing to happen when you are at work, least of all where i work.

leopardprintsock Sun 17-Nov-13 18:29:53

untilthecows = urgh, that is grim.

nennypops Sun 17-Nov-13 18:31:14

He was being a knob, but I think you do need to expect that knobs will come into your shop occasionally and learn to deal with them.

Finola1step Sun 17-Nov-13 18:32:41

He's a dick. There are unfortunately plenty of them about. Don't feel humiliated. But do feel sympathy for the poor woman who puts up with his crap. And not to mention his children.

Brandnewmamma Sun 17-Nov-13 18:34:57

You haven't lost your sense of humour.. You we caught off guard when you needed to be professional. He was absolutely out of order. Not very funny.. A bit sad actually. I wish I was one of those people who could think of witty answers but I can't.

I agree its a bit immature of a grown man, but I don't know why you would feel humiliated or offended.

He sounds a bit like Jim Royle from The Royle Family.

I would've smiled and left. But if you spend a lot of time on MN you will probably read a lot more into it.

MistAllChuckingFrighty Sun 17-Nov-13 18:42:08

There is nothing more to read than "knobber"

Don't you like MN, elskovs ?

FracturedViewOfLife Sun 17-Nov-13 18:44:03

I had two people lick their hands, wipe it on my uniform and say "lets get you out of those wet clothes" when I worked in a pub. Fucking grim.

claretandamberforever Sun 17-Nov-13 18:47:00

Best retort I heard to someone who had asked for a phone number..

"Yeah, course it's 0121 do one" grin

pianodoodle Sun 17-Nov-13 18:50:03

Just what you need - a "hilarious" dad.

I guarantee his kids will soon be mortified of him. His wife probably is already!
