AIBU?

To hate my neighbours

We put black metal sheeting on the gates to stop the dog barking at anyone who walks past, now they've reported me to the council. I spent a lot of money having the sheets soldered on and sprayed not realizing that I needed planning permission.
I hate them, they are so mean AIBU?

YABU to hate them over your lack of planning permission.

Its not just that its lots of other things too. I had my trees pruned they asked the tree expert to cut their side and put it on my bill, even though the tree is in their garden.
Theyre horrid

If its your tree its your responsibility to cut it no matter where the branches are.

'I hate them they are so mean'

You sound like a child. You didn't seek planning permission and now you're facing the consequences, it's life.

Thats because I am sick of nasty jealous neighbours. I dont understand people with that bitter tattle tail mentality. I couldnt care less what others do to their own house and I would never report anyone to the council.

Why did you pay for a tree that is not on your property?

Report
clam · 11/11/2013 15:26

I don't understand why you were having their tree pruned then? Or why "your" tree surgeons would have undertaken additional work for them when they were meant to be working for you? Tell them (the tree guys) that you didn't authorise the extra as they didn't run it past you, so you're not going to pay.

Their branches where hanging over my garden, its a big oak tree and needed pruning.

Why are they nasty and jealous? Are there any other occasions than this that they've gone against you?

You might not care less but others do, is it an eyesore to them or? To be honest they're probably also pissed off at the fact you've been letting your dogs bark all the time, how come they're in the garden so much?

So if your neighbours built a huge extension without planning permission you would say nothing?
It was their tree, you had no right to prune it,you also had no right to not abide by planning laws.

slickrick · 11/11/2013 15:32

I dont leave my dog out to bark, I put the sheeting on so he can go outside more often. Its not an eyesore as lots of people in my road have gates with black sheeting.
Yes, they have done lots of other things but I cant post everything on here.

Tbh it sounds like you need to train your dog so it doesn't bark at every person that walks past, not solder sheets onto the fence.

If you didn't instruct your tree surgeon to undertake the extra work on their tree, then don't pay him for the extra work!

There is def more to this than just these two issues though!

Can you start again and explain more clearly what has happened to who and when?

Report
Strumpetron · 11/11/2013 15:38

Well for one I don't think dogs should be in the front garden anyway if they're barking all the time. Not fair on the people walking past and the neighbours.

Did you let them know you were going to prune the tree?

Report
SarahPercyAndBill · 11/11/2013 15:39

doesn't matter. you hired them and if they take instructions from a random neighbor, then they can chase that neighbor for their payment.

And you can't prune just one half of a tree. When I had all mine done recently, I went to discuss it with the neighbours concerned. We agreed to split the cost of one that is technically theirs, but has actually self-seeded across the boundary line. All pleasant and reasonable. Just like the other neighbour, who knocked and asked if I minded if they trimmed a bit off my magnolia as it was over-hanging their patio. I said of course not.
Another neighbour often mows my front lawn, as she has her mower out anyway, as I often do back for her and for the guys the other side.
I think it's very important to try to get along with your neighbours.

You can prune anything that overhangs your property, but you have to offer the cuttings back to them.
Can you ask for retrospective planning permission?

Report
clam · 11/11/2013 16:18

But if you're talking about an oak tree, which the OP is, and it's sufficiently large to warrant getting guys in to do it properly, you can't just hack off the bits on your side. It needs lopping properly, back to the appropriate size. That needs consultation with neighbours, if it affects their property.

Planning permission for sheets on gates Confused. Hardy and erection Grin of a large barn the front garden. Cant fart in this country without having to get permission from the council jobsworths.

A lot of dogs bark when people walk past houses. What are you meant to do.......gag it? As long as it does not bark constantly all day and night then cant see the issue

Report

How big is this gate to cause offensive? They must be nit-picking unless they can see it very closely from.their property and its ugly/totally out of character for the area/ blocking their daylight.
