AIBU?

to think that the pet rehoming charity were at fault

for rehoming a large dog in a 1 bed flat which is already housing a mother and child?

If the charity were unaware of the housing situation, why are they unaware? Shouldn't they be asking questions?

I've just bought a labrador puppy and the breeder asked me all sorts of questions... how large was my house? how large is my garden? how many hours do I work? The breeder had already turned away 2 prospective puppy buyers for not having the right environment for a Labrador.

I think IF what what is being said in the media is correct then questions certainly need to be asked of the assessment carried out before homing the dog.

Do we really need another thread on this?

This is already being debated on t'other one!

Hate to say it but a charity also asks the same questions, generally - usually are more strict than breeders. Can't comment on your mentioned case as I don't know exactly what happened for a dog to end up in a one bedroom flat and I am sure none of us will know exactly.

The 'large' dog in the photos is not the dog that killed this little girl.

We just don't know the facts so although we are all angry we must wait to find out what happened we may never really know luckily this is extremely rare.

Yanbu, if they knew the environment where the dog would be living.

From the (limited and constantly changing) information in the media this was not a rehoming charity, it was a council pound. They hold stray dogs for their requisite seven days and then either rehome or euthanise them.

Some council pounds do operate as rescue centres and are very good in terms of assessing both dog and prospective owner, doing home checks, neutering and vaccinating the dogs etc., some do nothing at all.

I foresee a lot of badmouthing genuine dog rescues, hysteria about rescue dogs of any kind and a whole new swathe of people buying from puppy farms. Then dumping the resultant fucked-up adolescent dogs where... oh, wait, the rescue centres.

The flat is a bit of a red herring, it is perfectly possible to provide adequate care for a dog in a small house or one without a garden. Having another bedroom and a square of lawn would not have made the outcome any different here.

So we have to rely on other pepole to make choices for us?

Most people who do research on dog breeds before getting one, wouldnt come up with a dog like that.

I don't think so Tob .

We have the whole internet at our fingers to help us make informed choices when buying dogs.

where to get them from, why, which breed is best.

If what is being said is true then I agree, it doesn't seem a if it would be fair to anyone, family or dog, for such a large, active dog to be rehomed in a 1-bed flat. I heard someone this morning saying they generally don't rehome dogs with any unknowns in their history with your children anyway.

But it is all media speculation at the moment, and we don't know enough.

I think this was a terrible tragedy which will do the amazing (and relentless) work done by responsible rehoming centres no favours whatsoever.

I don't know enough of the facts to comment but I would be surprised if the media reported "facts" are true if no action is taken however I don't believe a lack of garden would have made a blind bit of difference to the sad outcome

I fully agree that this is going to do huge damage to the image of 'rescue dogs'. Posts on previous thread already confirming this, ''this is why i'd never have a rescue dog'', cue more puppies being bred and bought whilst deserving dogs languish in kennels Sad
