AIBU?

To let my DD wear thigh high leather boots?!

I have been having a conversation with my DDs about Christmas and what they might want. DD2 who is 15 desperately wants a pair of leather thigh high/over the knee boots. I'm torn.

She wants ones like these - obviously not Chloe ones at £800 but along these lines!

Part of me thinks fine, they're practical, they're flat, they will be warm and waterproof. The other part of me can't quite get the 'Pretty Woman' connotation out of my head. I can only imagine what DH will say when I suggest them!

I asked her what she'd put them with, and she said skinny jeans, skater skirts and tights, dresses etc, so normal teenage stuff, not latex mini dresses or hot pants.

I just can't help thinking that whilst they're very fashionable at the moment, they're not really appropriate for a teenage girl. But then I can't really justify why not!

Would you let your 15 year old have them?!

Nope. If you can't get the "Pretty Woman" connotation out of your head, imagine men having the same image in their heads. I wouldn't want to encourage men to look at my daughter in a sexual way. I know really women shouldn't change the way they dress because of men but she's a child still. I wouldn't want to buy her something that encourages men in eyeing up my child.

Plus they look awful Grin

Finola1step · 23/10/2013 18:32

No I wouldn't but that's because I think they look awful.

canweseethebunnies · 23/10/2013 18:33

I think they're ok. They look more like galoshes than Pretty Woman IMO Grin

Pinkpinot · 23/10/2013 18:36

I don't have girls, and I thought if be horrified
But i think with jeans they'd be ok
Just not tiny skirts

BodaciousTatas · 23/10/2013 18:36

I would, they just look like boots to me. I showed them to dd who is 15 and she said a lot of her friend have them.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 23/10/2013 18:38

The cheap ones will look exactly that...cheap. YABU, sorry.

ICameOnTheJitney · 23/10/2013 18:43

Nope! She'd look a bugger in them anyway if she's got the bod of an average 15 year old! You need a good bit of height and elegance to carry them off. I had a pair in the early 90s (old) when I was 17 and looked ok but 17 is different to 15 in general and I'm quite tall.

CoffeeTea103 · 23/10/2013 18:44

Pretty woman definitely! Sorry but that's what might come across.

natwebb79 · 23/10/2013 18:47

I can't see anything wrong with them. It's not as if they're red patent leather with 4" heels! Grin

Nancy66 · 23/10/2013 18:48

I think they're fine. They are flat boots that just come up a bit higher than usual ones do . Nothing 'Pretty Woman' about them.

MuffCakes · 23/10/2013 18:49

I can't see anything wrong with them tbh,

Mandy2003 · 23/10/2013 18:50

Pretty Woman is a bit old to have much meaning to boys/men today though isn't it?

TiggyD · 23/10/2013 18:52

Does she like fly fishing or something?

Strumpetron · 23/10/2013 18:53

They're boots it doesn't matter what other people think it's their fault if they have such a connotation with them. They'll keep her legs warm and dry!

ChristineDaae · 23/10/2013 18:54

I love them, and would have loved them even more when I was 15. With jeans they would look gorgeous. No leather mini skirts and she'll be fine Smile

roguepixie · 23/10/2013 18:58

I like them and think they'd be fine for a 15 year old.

They Pretty Woman connotation would come in if they had 4 inch heels but as they are flats I think they are suitable and she'll love them.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 23/10/2013 19:00

My first thoughts were Bananarama (shows age) and Puss in Boots!

eggyweggies · 23/10/2013 19:00

Only with skinny jeans or trousers!

What about some Chelsea Boots?

Velocitractor · 23/10/2013 19:02

I always wanted a pair (and, at the tender age of 34, still do secretly Grin). Can see what you mean about the Pretty Women connotation but surely it depends on the type? (matt, flat, black rather than patent, 7 inch heel, red for example?)

Having said that, part of me thinks let her get it out of her system plus surely your teens is the best time for dodgy 'fashion'?!

drawsofdrawers · 23/10/2013 19:04

A friend was wearing similar with a knee length flowery dress at the weekend. They looked great. Would look good with jeans and a jumper too

they will look great and she will look great.

if people look at a 15 year old girl and think prostitute then that's their problem.

I'm usually in favour of letting teenagers wear what they want within reason. Because I wasn't allowed to wear this and wasn't allowed to wear that. Which just made me mad for no good reason. But I have to say I don't much like the sound of these boots. If a lot of her friends wear them I'd say why not!

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/10/2013 19:08

They're fine? They're not 4 inch PVC heels are they.

mummratheevertired · 23/10/2013 19:10

They're fine. Even with patterned tights and a skirt they're fine.
